Raiders' Season Ends in Region XII Tournament Loss to Cuyahoga

MAY 14, 2026, SUMMIT TWP, MI – The Grand Rapids Community College baseball team saw its postseason run come to an end Friday afternoon at the NJCAA Region XII Tournament at Jackson College, falling to Cuyahoga Community College by a final score of 18-10.

The loss ends the Raiders' season at 30-14 overall, while Cuyahoga advanced to the tournament semifinals to face Macomb Community College.

Despite the defeat, GRCC put together one of the program's strongest seasons in recent memory. The Raiders captured their fourth consecutive conference championship after posting a dominant 22-3 conference record and finished undefeated at home at 15-0. GRCC also entered Thursday riding a 17-game winning streak after opening regional play with a sweep of Mid Michigan College and a comeback victory over Henry Ford College before losses to top-ranked Kellogg Community College and Cuyahoga ended the tournament run.

The Raiders came out swinging Friday, jumping ahead 3-0 in the top of the first inning behind another home run from sophomore slugger Peter Heintz. The blast was Heintz's third homer in as many days and his 13th of the season.

GRCC extended the lead to 5-0 in the third inning on an RBI double from Michael Hurlbutt and a sacrifice fly by Gabe Stouffer. An AJ Speigl two-run single in the fourth inning pushed the Raiders' advantage to 7-1.

Cuyahoga responded quickly, however, erupting for six runs on six hits in the bottom of the fourth inning to even the score at 7-7.

The Raiders briefly regained control, taking leads of 9-7 and later 10-8, but the Triceratops answered again in the sixth inning with two home runs to move ahead 11-10 — a lead they would not relinquish.

Cuyahoga then broke the game open with a seven-run eighth inning to secure the run-rule victory and close out the Raiders' season.

GRCC finished with seven hits offensively, led by two-hit performances from Heintz and Hurlbutt. Cuyahoga collected 22 hits in the contest.

The Raiders are expected to have several players recognized with postseason honors, which are scheduled to be announced next week.
