Grand Rapids, MI—The Raiders remain undefeated in the Regional Tournament after downing Vincennes University in 4 sets. The Raiders, despite committing numerous serving errors, move onto the next round after winning an exciting shootout set to seal the match.
GRCC started out on a sour note. The girls committed serving error after serving error before dropping the set by a score of 21-25. Despite the fact that they were not playing their best volleyball of the season, the Raiders were obviously the more athletic team of the 2, and were able to rebound during the next three sets.
The next second set was a hard fought one, with the Raiders eventually emerging as the victor by a set score of 25-21. After winning 2 sets straight, the Raiders carried the momentum over into the third and dismantled Vincennes, winning 25-14.
Both teams played near the top of their game during the last set. Trading points back and forth, the teams found themselves tied at 25 apiece. GRCC earned a clutch kill before acer server, Sarah Gardner, did what she does best; serve an ace.
Despite battling a hamstring injury, Raider Sophomore, Micaela Deshetsky, led her squad with 16 kills. Shelby Ruffner followed with 12 and Emily Johnson had another 9. Amanda Glaza headed up the defensive end of the court, digging 21 balls while teammate Taylor Gates dug 15 balls of her own.
The Raiders are poised for success after stringing together a series of Region XII wins. Though their opponent is yet to be decided, GRCC will face one of a group of very strong teams. Potential opponents include Jackson College, Muskegon CC, Sinclair CC or a rematch against Vincennes University. Regardless of the opponent, the Raiders will next take the court at 1:00 PM tomorrow.
Due to not having lost a match, any opponent will need to defeat Grand Rapids Community College twice in the double elimination tournament to earn a berth to the National Tournament.
