Grand Rapids, MI—The Raiders are setting the MCCAA on fire this season. The girls are currently undefeated in conference play and have lost only once through 18 games of play. With 4 games in 2 days this weekend, the club will need to bring their A game to stay atop the MCCAA.
The Raider Challenge hosting GRCC team will open play against a struggling Genesee Community College squad on Saturday afternoon. Although the Cougars are struggling, they have fallen to some very tough competitors, including all 3 of the Raiders other weekend opponents.
Next up for the Raiders is a tough St Clair Community College team. The Skippers are off to a decent start for the 2012 campaign, and have posted a 12-7 record. SCCCC have fallen in 3 consecutive matches, but will look to regain their early season form.
Things only get tougher for the Raiders on Sunday.
The girls open up play on Sunday against a very strong Schoolcraft Community College team. Although the team is not currently ranked in the national poll, they are not far off. The Ocelots are off to solid start in 2012 with a 5-1 MCCAA East record while 14-7 overall.
Following the Schoolcraft match, GRCC will square off against perennial rival Owen’s Community College. The Express remain one of the top teams to beat in the nation, and currently hold the #5 slot in the NJCAA DII polls. With a 16-3 record thus far in 2012, the Express are blowing by nearly everyone in their path. Everyone, that is, except the Raiders.
The Raiders faced off against Owens CC once earlier this season, and dealt the team their first loss of the season. The Express have gone on a tear since facing GRCC, and have won 8 straight matches.
With plenty of tough competition over the weekend, the Raiders have a chance to bolster their impressive record even more. A set of wins could see the Raiders climb even higher than their #3 position in the NJCAA polls.
Competition begins at noon on Saturday in the Gordon Hunsberger arena at the Gerald R. Ford Fieldhouse. Stay tuned to GRCCRaiders.com for further coverage.
