Grand Rapids, MI—The Raiders earned another pair of victories this weekend as they breezed past the Junior Varsity squad from Davenport University and split a pair of games with Jackson Community College. The Raiders saw their 15 game win streak snap as they fell to Jackson in the second half of a double header, but despite the loss, have won 15 of their last 16 contests.
The Raiders showed no fear of superstitions on Friday the 13th, and dominated Davenport’s JV Panthers. GRCC got off to a quick start, scoring 11 of their 13 runs in the first 4 innings of play.
Kyle Orlowski and Ron Sanders both had a pair of RBI’s as the Raiders tamed the Panthers with a 13-3 victory. Teammates Drew Dunbar, Brian Portelli and Christian Lienesch all had 2 hits, 1 shy of Jared Theissen who had a game-high 3 hits. Tyler Fults earned the win for the Raiders, and allowed only 4 hits.
On Saturday the Raiders faced off against Jackson Community College, a team that they dominated earlier in the season by a score of 16-5. This time around a more determined Jackson squad proved to be more of a challenge. The Raiders won the first game by a score of 4-1, but dropped the second in the final inning of play by a 7-8 margin.
Brendan Bender threw all 7 innings of the first game for the win. Brendan threw 9 strikeouts and allowed 3 hits. Jared Theissen continued to be an offensive force, this time going 2 for 4 while batting and earning 2 RBI’s.
The second game saw Jackson get on the scoreboard first. The game was tight all the way until the end, when the Raiders fell just short in the eighth inning.
Down by a score of 8-5 in the bottom of the eighth, the Raiders nearly tied the game. Mike Battistelli and Kyle Orlowski scored on a Jared Theissen single bringing the score up to 7-8, but the Raiders couldn’t overcome some sound defensive play by the Jackson team.
The Raiders are now 20-17 on the season. The guys will continue their home-stand as they host the Chargers of Ancilla College tomorrow at Belknap Park. Play will begin at 2:00 PM
