Grand Rapids, MI-- The number 9 ranked Raiders improved their flawless record to 4-0 Saturday afternoon with a massacre of the Ellsworth Community College Panthers. GRCC defeated the team by a margin of 73-14, and should move even further up the NJCAA rankings.
Grand Rapids opened the scoring in just under 3 minutes of play.
Devin Jarret scored on a short run after an 8 play, 58 yard drive. Kicker
Greg Cognetto started his flawless game and kicked the extra point.
Only 30 seconds later GRCC found themselves tied with Ellsworth. TJ James rushed for 4 yards to score after a huge 83 yard kick return from teammate Darby Lundy. It appeared as though the game would be a close match. The James touchdown, however, would prove to be the last point Ellsworth would gain until the third quarter.
The Raiders offense kicked into high gear for the rest of the first half, and
Devin Jarret would rush for 3 more touchdowns. Teammate
Torico Searcy rushed for 2 touchdowns,
Elan Banks caught a 13 yard pass to score, and
Greg Cognetto kicked a 30 yard field goal all before half time. GRCC headed to the locker rooms with a 45-7 lead.
When the teams took the field for the second half, Ellsworth appeared to be much more motivated. The Panthers started with a 95 yard, 20 play drive that lead to Dexter Holmes scoring on a 15 yard pass from Willie Tindal. The Panthers players seemed to regain their confidence for a short while, but eventually folded under the weight of GRCC's powerful defense.
Devin Jarret scored his fourth touchdown of the day on a 1 yard rush in the fourth quarter. Teammates
Malik Norman,
Tahj Dent, and
Anthony Ferzzelll all scored on rushes as well while the Raiders breezed by Ellsworth CC.
Quarterback
Cody Kater put forth a stellar effort and completed 16 of 24 passes for 227 yards. As a whole the Raiders nearly doubled Ellsowrths offensive output with a total of 643 yards.
On defense
Antonio Etter Cody King, and
James Wimberly all snagged one interception, while
Travis Mikita,
Terrell Clinkscale, and
Malcolm Goines were each credited with a sack. As a unit the team appeared nearly impeccable.
GRCC travels to Fort Dodge, Iowa next to take on Iowa Central Community College. The game will take place on Sunday at noon.
