Grand Rapids, MI—GRCC’s Raider football team is on the road heading to Milledgeville, Georgia for Saturday’s matchup against the Bulldogs of Georgia Military College. GRCC is coming off of a huge 56-48 upset win over Iowa Western Community College who entered the contest against the Raiders as the 5
th ranked team in the nation.
The Raiders enter Saturday’s game undefeated and boasting some impressive figures. Currently ranked 7
th in total offense nationally, the Raiders have 2,479 total yards of offense averaging just under 500 yards per game. The leader of the Raiders offensive attack is quarterback
Cody Kater, who in six games has completed 82-of-122 for 12 touchdowns and four interceptions. Receivers
Elan Banks,
Keyon Cole,
Terrance Moore,
Brian Parker,
Torico Searcy and
Corey Smith all have at least 100 yards receiving.
On the ground, the Raiders have relied heavily on running back
Devin Jarret, who has had an outstanding season after his number was called when sophomore running back
Korey Ringer was injured in week three against North Dakota State College of Science.
Jarret, named the NJCAA Offensive Player of the Week this week, has rushed the ball 94 times for 505 yards and 12 touchdowns averaging 5.4 yards per carry. The Raiders have also been assisted offensively by kicker
Greg Cognetto who has made 44-of-44 extra point attempts.
Defensively the Raiders are ranked 3
rd in the nation allowing only 909 yards of offense with 637 of those yards belonging to Iowa Western after their shootout last weekend at Houseman Field. Leading the Raiders in tackles are
Nathan Lindsey with 32 and
Myrick Gwynn with 28.
The 3-2 Bulldogs are unranked this season but are not a team to be taken lightly. The Bulldogs dropped two games earlier this season to 7
th ranked Navarro and 4
th ranked Snow College. Since those two losses, the Bulldogs are on a three game winning streak where they have out scored their opponents 124 to 37.
This season the Bulldogs are led on the ground by running back JaVontae Edwards who has 298 yards and two touchdowns on 47 carries. Running backs Jarrett Neely and Mario Alford have also made some contributions on the ground combining for 310 yards on 47 carries for two touchdowns. Bulldog quarterbacks Nico Ranieri and Anthony Riggin both see significant action on the field and have completed 54-of-97 attempts for 777 yards.
Defensively the Bulldogs have allowed 1,348 total yard of offense in five games.
When the Raiders faced the Bulldogs in 2010 they walked away with a 49-20 win at home. This season’s contest favors the Raiders statistically, but the Bulldog’s are expected to put up quite a fight on their home turf. Kickoff for Saturday’s game is set for 12:00pm in Milledgeville, Georgia.
