Played for FaR Out volleyball club out of Kentwood, Michigan from 2010 to 2013. In final year, her team finished state runners-up.

Parents are Brent and Tiffannie Gates both of whom had excellent athletic careers. Brent played professional baseball for the Oakland A's, Seattle Mariners, and the Minnesota Twins. He was the Big Ten Player of the Year, First Team All-American, and also a 1st round draft pick. Tiffannie had a stellar volleyball career at Arizona State as a starting setter. She still is in the record books for various setting records including 65 assists in one match.
