Coach Derrick Owens Sr. is entering his third season as an Assistant Men’s Basketball Coach for the Raiders. Coach Owens’s support helped the Raiders during the 2009-2010 season as they earned a trip to the NJCAA National Championship Tournament. Before coaching at GRCC, Owens coached at Eastern Michigan University (1999-20000 and Schoolcraft Community College (2005-2006). As the Head Coach of Detroit St. Martin de Porres, Owens brought home four State Championships (1992, 1996, 1998 & 1999). Additionally, Owens won an AAU National Championship in 2009. Coach Owen’s three sons all coach college basketball; Jason (CMU), Geoffrey (GRCC) and Derrick Jr. at Jackson Community College. Owens lives in Grand Rapids, MI with his wife Cheryl of 33 years.
