*All-State Shortstop at Zeeland High School in 1976.
*Two-time All-American in 1977 (3rd team) and in 1978 (2nd team).
*Played at Central Michigan University (NCAA DI) in 1979 & 1980, earning All-MAC Conference honors.
*Signed with the San Francisco Giants in 1980.
*Enjoyed stints in the minors with the Giants, St. Louis Cardinals and Pittsburgh Pirates, climbing as high as Class AA before returning to West Michigan in 1984.
*Within 10 days of coming, he was named head coach at Grand Valley State University (NCAA DII), while still playing baseball for the Sullivan's amateur team, helping the team to a National Baseball Congress championship.
*Led Lakers to a 32-13 record and the GLIAC conference title. It was the first 30 win season in school history and six players went on to play professionally.
*After a one-year stint at Grand Valley, he enrolled at Miami of Ohio to pursue his master's degree. While in Oxford, Ohio, he also was a grad assistant to the baseball team.
*Wabeke then returned back home, and began a two-year apprenticeship under former GRJC coach, Tom Hofmann, before Hof hand-picked him as a successor.
*Wabs then began is 17 year head coaching stint at GRJC/CC during the 1987-88 school year.
*Reached 500 wins in his 11th season, in 1998.
*Won four total national championships, the first four in school history for any sport... including back to back titles in 1996 & 1997, and back to back again in 2003 & 2004, which was is final season as the Raiders head coach.
*Once Emila Caprara retired as the AD, his right hand men, Doug Wabeke & Steve Kemperman both took over as Co-Athletic Directors at GRCC.
