SEPT. 30, 2026, MUSKEGON, Mich. – The Grand Rapids Community College soccer teams battled through a rain-soaked afternoon Friday at Muskegon Community College, but both teams came up just short in tight Michigan Community College Athletic Association conference matches.
The GRCC women fell 2-1 to Muskegon CC, while the Raiders' men dropped a 3-2 decision to the Jayhawks.
The results mirrored the teams' earlier meetings this season. GRCC swept both matches against MCC at home on Sept. 2, with each victory coming by one goal. On Friday, Muskegon CC returned the favor, winning both contests by a single goal.
Women: GRCC 1, Muskegon CC 2
The GRCC women fell to 4-4-1 overall and 3-2 in conference play following the 2-1 setback.
After Muskegon CC opened the scoring, the Raiders answered in the 31st minute when Avery Dekker scored her fourth goal of the season to even the match at 1-1. Hannah Pleiman provided the assist off the free kick.
MCC's deciding goal came on a penalty kick in the 48th minute.
GRCC controlled much of the offensive play, outshooting Muskegon CC 25-14, but the steady rain and difficult field conditions made it challenging for either team to consistently generate quality chances on goal.
Despite the conditions, the Raiders continued to create opportunities throughout the match but were unable to find the equalizer.
Men: GRCC 2, Muskegon CC 3
The GRCC men saw their three-game winning streak come to an end with a 3-2 loss to Muskegon CC. The Raiders are now 5-3-2 overall and 2-2 in conference play.
Muskegon CC took a 2-0 lead into halftime and extended its advantage to 3-0 before GRCC began its comeback.
With 16:35 remaining, Ethan Schwartzfisher put the Raiders on the scoreboard with his team-leading sixth goal of the season.
GRCC continued to pressure the Jayhawks, and Andrew Lewis cut the deficit to one with his second goal of the season with 8:53 remaining.
The Raiders generated several more opportunities in the closing minutes but could not complete the comeback.
GRCC finished with a 20-14 advantage in shots, while reigning conference Goalkeeper of the Week Ramon Lujano-Salto recorded five saves for the Raiders.
Both GRCC teams will look to return to the win column Friday when they travel to St. Clair County Community College for a non-conference doubleheader. The men's match is scheduled for 3 p.m., followed by the women's match.
