Box Score 4 Apr. 25, 2026, ALPENA, MI – It was a standout Friday for Grand Rapids Community College athletics, highlighted by Carson Osborn earning MCCAA Player of the Year honors, a strong showing from the golf team, and dominant sweeps by both baseball and softball at Alpena CC.
The GRCC men's golf team capped its conference regular season with a narrow third-place finish at the Montcalm CC Invitational. The Raiders shot a 296 (+16), finishing just one stroke behind co-leaders Montcalm CC and Marian University-Ancilla, who tied at 295, with Montcalm winning the tiebreaker.
The finish secured GRCC as conference runner-up, just five strokes behind Marian University-Ancilla in the final standings.
Individually, the Raiders placed five golfers inside the top 20 in a field of 67. Trevor Hobbs and Carson Osborn led the charge with rounds of 72 (+2), tying for fifth. Brody Cook and Lucas VanMaanen each shot 76 (T-17), while Theo Oddy added a 77 (T-20). Landon Simpson (80) and Ari Ziska (83) rounded out the lineup.
Osborn's stellar season was recognized with MCCAA Player of the Year and Freshman of the Year honors. Hobbs and Cook were named All-Conference, with Cook also earning a spot on the All-Freshman Team.
GRCC now prepares for the MCCAA Championship on April 27 in Plymouth, Indiana.
On the baseball field, the Raiders continued their strong conference run with a doubleheader sweep of Alpena CC, winning 10-1 and 13-3. GRCC improves to 20-12 overall and remains in first place in the conference with a 16-3 record.
In Game 1, the Raiders wasted no time, scoring four runs in the first inning and extending their lead to 7-0 after a leadoff home run by Owen Hendrix in the fourth. Michael Hurlbutt added a solo homer in the fifth as part of a 12-hit effort. Hendrix, Hurlbutt, Peter Heintz, and Jack Lockwood all recorded multi-hit games. Kyle O'Hearn was outstanding on the mound, throwing a complete game while allowing just one run and striking out three.
Game 2 saw GRCC erupt for six runs in the first inning, highlighted by a three-run homer from Carter Gulick. AJ Speigl added a homer in the second, and Hurlbutt went deep again in the sixth. The Raiders totaled 17 hits, with every starter recording at least one. Heintz, Hurlbutt, and Gabe Stouffer each had three hits, while Stouffer drove in four runs.
Softball matched the dominance with a pair of run-rule victories, 10-2 and 9-1, both in six innings.
In Game 1, Grace Salley sparked the offense with a leadoff home run in the second inning. After Alpena tied the game, GRCC responded with a six-run fourth inning, ignited by a leadoff triple from Tia Schone. Schone finished 3-for-3 with two RBIs, while Salley added two hits and two RBIs. Lilly Klop earned the win, improving to 6-1 with five strikeouts and no walks. The game ended in the sixth on Abbie Critchett's sacrifice fly.
In Game 2, Natalee Beck led the way, going 3-for-3 with four RBIs, including a two-run homer in the first inning and a walk-off sacrifice fly in the sixth. Megan Lillie improved to 13-0 in the circle, striking out five without issuing a walk. The Raiders capitalized on 16 free bases on the day (14 walks and two hit-by-pitches).
Both Raider baseball and softball will look to complete their series sweeps at Alpena on Saturday, with first pitch scheduled for 1 p.m. and 3 p.m.
