Mar. 5, 2026, GRAND RAPIDS, MI – It was a busy stretch for the Grand Rapids Community College athletic teams competing on the road this week, as the Raiders golf team wrapped up its first spring tournament in Alabama, the baseball team concluded its southern trip in Florida, and the softball team battled through a pair of close games in Clermont.

Golf: Raiders Improve Each Round at Ron Marshall Spring Fling

The GRCC men's golf team opened its spring season at the Ron Marshall Spring Fling in Scottsboro, Alabama, finishing 13th out of 16 teams in a tournament loaded with many of the nation's top programs. Official Results

Competing against a field that features teams regularly qualifying for the national tournament, the Raiders posted a three-round score of +71, showing steady improvement throughout the event. After opening rounds of +26 and +29, GRCC saved its best performance for last with a +16 final round.

Leading the way for the Raiders was Lucas VanMaanen, who finished 49th overall at +14, recording four birdies while avoiding any double bogeys during the tournament. Carson Osborn placed 59th at +16 and totaled seven birdies, including five during the final round surge. Trevor Hobbs finished 72nd at +20 with five birdies.

Also competing for GRCC were Theo Oddy (94th, +30, two birdies), Landon Simpson (t-97th, +35, three birdies), and Carter Dominowski (t-97th, +35, six birdies).

"After losing three of our top six players after the fall season, including our best player, the team did a great job," said the first year coach Chris Sobieck. "It was a fantastic trip and being able to spend five days with the guys working on our games, you can see it pay off in round three where we were very competitive. Coming out of winter and getting onto real grass in tournament conditions is a real test.

"We learned a lot about ourselves and what we need to do to work to the top. We have the talent — we need to improve execution — and the guys know what they need to do. I'm very excited about the rest of the season and expect vast improvements by the time we reach regionals."

Baseball: Raiders Drop Spring Break Finale

The GRCC baseball team closed out its southern trip Wednesday with a 12-7 loss to Pensacola State College, finishing the trip after facing a challenging slate of NJCAA Division I opponents.
The Raiders recorded 13 hits in the contest, with five players collecting two hits each: Henry Streeter, Peter Heintz (double), Owen Hendrix, Andrew Conrad (double), and Michael Hurlbutt.

Four pitchers combined on the mound for GRCC, with Kyle O'Hearn making the start and Landon Terry, Aiden Friess, and Cam Schader working in relief.

The Raiders went 0-8 against NJCAA Division I competition during the trip, including four games against the nation's No. 1 ranked team. The schedule does not ease up as GRCC returns north, with the Raiders set to face defending regional champion Kellogg Community College in a doubleheader on March 13.

Softball: Raiders Come Up Short in Two Games in Florida

The GRCC softball team dropped both of its games Thursday in Clermont, Florida, falling to Iowa Lakes Community College, 10-9, and Concordia (Wis.) University, 8-4, moving the Raiders to 7-5 on the season with four games remaining on their spring trip.

Against Iowa Lakes, the Raiders rallied after falling behind 6-0, eventually cutting the deficit to one run late in the game. GRCC had the tying run on third base in the final inning but came up just short, striking out to end the game.

Libby VanFleet delivered a standout performance with three doubles and two RBIs, while Kenady O'Leary added a double and a game-high three RBIs. The Raiders outhit Iowa Lakes 14-11, but four defensive errors proved costly, as only four of the Lakers' 10 runs were earned.

In the second game of the day, GRCC fell to Concordia (Wis.) University, managing six hits in the 8-4 loss. Lauren Wiley led the offense with two hits, including a double. Defensive struggles continued for the Raiders, committing three more errors, which contributed to five unearned runs among Concordia's eight total.

The Raiders will continue their Florida schedule on March 6, taking on Benedictine University at 12:15 p.m. followed by John Melvin Christian College at 2:30 p.m. as they look to bounce back and close the trip strong.
