Mar. 30, 2026, GRAND RAPIDS, MI – It was a successful weekend across the board for Grand Rapids Community College athletics, as the Raider baseball and softball teams wrapped up their season series against Delta College at Belknap Park, while the golf team competed at the Cougar Spring Shootout in Normal, Illinois.
Baseball Sweeps Series, Holds First Place
The GRCC baseball team completed a five-game season series sweep of Delta College with a pair of home victories, winning 6-2 and 9-4. The Raiders remain alone in first place in the MCCAA North, improving to 9-10 overall and 8-1 in conference play.
In Game 1, GRCC jumped out early thanks to timely hitting. Andrew Conrad doubled in the second inning, followed by a single from Carter Gulick, setting the stage for AJ Speigl's three-run double. Cannon Paul followed with an RBI single to give the Raiders a 4-0 lead.
Delta responded with two runs in the third, but GRCC answered with runs in the third and fifth innings to secure the win. The Raiders outhit Delta 7-3, led by Speigl, who went 2-for-4 with three RBIs.
Ryan Delora (1-2) earned the win, tossing six innings with seven strikeouts, while Sam Schmuker closed out the game.
In Game 2, Delta struck first with two runs in the opening inning, but the Raiders responded quickly. Paul and Henry Streeter each delivered RBI hits to tie the game at 2-2. After a 55-minute delay to address lighting issues, GRCC came out energized.
Speigl singled to start the third, and Paul followed with an RBI triple to give GRCC the lead. Paul later scored on a wild pitch, and the Raiders broke the game open with four runs in the fourth inning, highlighted by RBI singles from Jack Lockwood and Speigl. Speigl added an RBI triple in the sixth to cap his big day.
GRCC outhit Delta 10-6, with Speigl collecting three hits and Paul adding two. Landon Terry (3-1) picked up the win in relief, throwing four innings with five strikeouts while allowing just three hits.
Softball Wins Series, Remains Second in Conference
The Raider softball team split its doubleheader with Delta, winning Game 1 in dominant fashion, 10-1 in five innings, before falling 5-3 in Game 2. GRCC still claimed the five-game series, four games to one, and remains in second place in the MCCAA North with an 18-7 overall record and 7-2 in conference play.
In Game 1, GRCC's offense exploded with two outs, scoring eight of its 10 runs in those situations. The Raiders plated one run in the second inning, three in the third, and six in the fourth, while outhitting Delta 15-5.
Kenady O'Leary extended her hitting streak to 10 games, going a perfect 3-for-3 with an RBI. Tia Schone also went 3-for-3 with an RBI, while Evelyn McEachen drove in a team-high three runs, going 2-for-2. Lilly Klop earned the win in the circle, improving to 4-1.
Game 2 was a pitcher's duel early before Delta broke through with three runs in the fifth inning and added two unearned runs in the sixth to take a 5-0 lead.
GRCC responded in the bottom of the sixth after drawing two one-out walks. Lauren Wiley delivered a clutch two-run triple and later scored on a groundout by Caitlyn Horvath to cut the deficit to 5-3.
Klop retired the side in the seventh to give the Raiders a chance, and GRCC put two runners on in the final frame but was unable to complete the comeback.
Golf Finishes Tied for 8th at Cougar Spring Shootout
The GRCC golf team tied for 8th place out of 15 teams at the Cougar Spring Shootout, held at Weibring Golf Club in Normal, Illinois. The Raiders posted rounds of 324 and 326 for a two-day total of +82. Des Moines Area Community College (DMACC) won the event at +27 in a field of 91 golfers.
Lucas VanMaanen led the way for GRCC, tying for 3rd place at +6 (70-78), recording seven birdies over the two rounds. His opening-round 70 was the second-best round of the tournament.
Carson Osborn tied for 37th at +18 (84-76) with four birdies, while Carter Dominowski tied for 70th at +26 (85-83), highlighted by an eagle and a birdie.
Trevor Hobbs finished tied for 76th at +31 (88-85) with one birdie, Theo Oddy posted a round of 82 with four birdies, and Landon Simpson placed 83rd at +36 (91-87) with one birdie.
