GRCC Men's Soccer Knocks Off No. 20 Schoolcraft, Clinches Regional Berth on Sophomore Day

Women's team falls to No. 12 Schoolcraft 5-1

OCT. 16, 2026, KENTWOOD, Mich. – The Grand Rapids Community College men's soccer team delivered a memorable finish to its home schedule Friday, knocking off No. 20-ranked Schoolcraft College, 2-1, to clinch a berth in the regional tournament on Sophomore Day. The Raiders' victory marked their third regional appearance in the program's four years of existence and the first for first-year head coach Alex Mendosa.

The GRCC women's team also hosted No. 12-ranked Schoolcraft in its final home match of the season, falling 5-1 despite an impressive first career goal from Hannah Pleiman.

Men's Soccer: Raiders Take Down No. 20 Schoolcraft, Punch Ticket to Regionals

GRCC controlled much of the first half against Schoolcraft, outshooting the Ocelots 8-3 and creating the game's opening goal in the 34th minute.

Sophomore Lucas Bouma scored his seventh goal of the season after receiving a corner-kick pass from Ethan Schwartzfisher, giving the Raiders a 1-0 lead. Schwartzfisher then doubled the advantage early in the second half, scoring directly off a free kick in the 50th minute to put GRCC ahead 2-0.

Schoolcraft, which entered the match ranked No. 20 nationally and unbeaten in conference play, cut the deficit to 2-1 with a goal from close range in the 73rd minute. The Raiders held firm the rest of the way to secure the significant victory.

GRCC finished with a 14-10 advantage in shots, continuing its strong offensive performance against one of the conference's top teams. The loss was Schoolcraft's first in conference play this season.

The victory improved the Raiders to 7-4-3 overall and 5-3-1 in conference play, officially securing their place in the regional tournament. GRCC has now qualified for regionals in three of its first four seasons, with Mendosa accomplishing the feat in his first year leading the program.

The Raiders will close out the regular season Oct. 21 at Marian University-Plymouth, which currently sits atop the conference standings with 18 points. GRCC (16 points) still has an opportunity to claim the conference championship: the Raiders must defeat Marian, and Marian must subsequently lose its final conference match against Lake Michigan College. If that scenario does not occur, GRCC will finish second in the conference and enter the five-team regional tournament as either the No. 3 or No. 4 seed.

Women's Soccer: Pleiman Scores First Career Goal Against No. 12 Schoolcraft

The GRCC women faced a tough challenge against No. 12-ranked Schoolcraft College, falling 5-1 in their final home match of the season.

Schoolcraft opened the scoring in the 19th minute, but the Raiders kept the deficit to one goal through halftime before delivering a memorable equalizer early in the second half.

In the 48th minute, Hannah Pleiman scored her first career goal in spectacular fashion, finding the back of the net off her own corner kick to tie the match at 1-1.

The Ocelots responded with four unanswered goals in the 60th, 67th, 85th and 89th minutes to pull away for the victory. Schoolcraft held a 20-3 advantage in shots, putting consistent pressure on the Raiders' defense. Goalkeeper Nyleese Bazan-Hernandez recorded seven saves in the loss.

With two regular-season matches remaining, the Raiders must win both to keep their regional hopes alive.

GRCC will travel to Marian University-Plymouth on Oct. 21 for its next match. The Raiders defeated Marian 2-0 in their first meeting and will look to repeat that performance as they pursue a postseason berth.
