Apr. 26, 2025, GRAND RAPIDS, MI – Grand Rapids Community College's baseball and softball teams delivered dominant performances on Saturday, sweeping Delta College in conference play with four shutout victories.
Baseball: Raiders Take Over First Place
The GRCC baseball team took firm control of first place in the conference with just two games remaining, improving to 24-18 overall and 17-6 in conference play. The Raiders extended their winning streak to five games with a pair of run-rule shutouts, winning 13-0 and 15-0, both in five innings.
In Game 1, Andrew Pohlmann (6-1) tossed his second shutout of the season, scattering six hits and striking out three. The Raiders' offense erupted early, plating eight runs in the second inning highlighted by four doubles, including a two-run double from Peter Heintz. They added five more runs in the third, powered by three more doubles and a towering three-run homer to dead center from Joey Hysell — his sixth of the season. GRCC tallied 15 hits, led by Hysell (3 hits, 4 RBIs) and Ty Sandwick (3 hits).
Game 2 followed a similar script, with Thano Klett (7-1) throwing a five-hit shutout with six strikeouts — also his second shutout of the year. GRCC exploded for 11 runs in the second inning, featuring a three-run double by Sandwick. Four more runs came across in the third, including an RBI double by Haiden Noakes to cap the scoring at 15-0. Jack Lockwood and Noakes each had three hits to lead the Raiders' 11-hit attack, with Lockwood and Sandwick each driving in three runs.
Softball: Conference Champions Stay Red Hot
The GRCC softball team, already crowned conference champions, continued their remarkable season, winning their 15th straight game to improve to 36-3 overall and 22-1 in the league, also with two games remaining.
In the opener, Grace Chisek got the Raiders started with a two-run double in the first inning. Violet McWhinnie added an RBI single to make it 3-0. The Raiders extended the lead in the second on RBIs from Chisek and Maddi Miller and made it 6-0 in the third behind an RBI single from Kalani Stowe. Stowe (15-0) was brilliant in the circle, allowing just three hits and striking out five in a complete-game shutout. She also led the offense with a 4-for-5 day at the plate. Chisek (3 RBIs) and Miller each had two hits, while Lauren Wiley and Evelyn McEachen also added singles.
In Game 2, Lilly Klop (6-0) was nearly untouchable, giving up just one hit to the third batter of the game before retiring 13 of the final 14 hitters she faced. Grace Salley and Joslyn VanderHart each delivered two-run singles, while Stowe and Chisek each ripped two-run doubles.
