Raiders Monday Recap: Strong Showing from Golf and Softball, Baseball Stumbles Against Mid Michigan

Apr. 14, 2025, GRAND RAPIDS, MI – It was a busy and mostly successful Monday for Grand Rapids Community College athletics, as the Raiders' golf and softball teams delivered standout performances, while the baseball squad ran into a tough Mid Michigan College team.

Golf Finishes Runner-Up at GRCC Invitational

Competing at the scenic but challenging Egypt Valley Golf Course, GRCC's golf team placed 2nd out of 13 teams in its home invitational. The Raiders shot a team score of 330, finishing just seven strokes behind Montcalm Community College, the tournament champion.

Colin Beckett and Evan Kaiser led the way for the Raiders, each carding an 80 to tie for 4th place individually out of 78 golfers. Dario Bonazzi wasn't far behind, tying for 10th with an 82. Other GRCC scores included Zach Vaandrager (84), Zach Steers (86), Trevor Hobbs (89), Owen Rosendall (89), and Parker Williamson (93).

The Raiders return to action April 18 at Jackson College.

Softball Sweeps Mid Michigan in Dominant Fashion

GRCC softball continued its red-hot run with a sweep over Mid Michigan, extending its winning streak to nine games and improving to 30-3 overall (16-1 conference). The Raiders earned a thrilling 6-5 walk-off win in game one and followed with a 13-0 rout in five innings.

Game 1: GRCC 6, Mid Michigan 5 (Walk-Off Win)
Sophomore catcher Maddi Miller played the hero, delivering a walk-off RBI double in the bottom of the 7th to lift the Raiders. GRCC jumped ahead in the 3rd with a 3-run double by Natalee Beck and an RBI single by Violet McWhinnie. Mid Michigan clawed back to tie it and briefly took a 5-4 lead in the 7th before GRCC rallied. Evelyn McEachen led off the inning with a double and scored on Beck's second RBI double. Two batters later, Miller brought home Libby VanFleet with the game-winning hit.

Beck went 2-for-3 with 4 RBIs and also earned the win in the circle with a brief relief appearance, improving to 3-0 on the season. McEachen also had two hits for GRCC.

Game 2: GRCC 13, Mid Michigan 0 (5 Innings)
The Raiders wasted no time in game two, with Miller's 2-run double helping GRCC jump out to a 3-0 lead in the 1st inning. The team exploded for nine runs in the 4th, sending 13 batters to the plate in their 16th run-rule win of the season.

Kalani Stowe was dominant once again, allowing just one hit in her fifth shutout while improving to 13-0. She also led the team with three hits. Beck added three hits and three RBIs, while Grace Chisek, Miller, and Macey Springer chipped in with two hits each.

Baseball Drops Two to Mid Michigan

The baseball team struggled to find its rhythm, falling to Mid Michigan in both games of Monday's doubleheader. The Raiders are now 18-17 overall and 12-5 in conference play, dropping them to second in the standings.

Game 1: Mid Michigan 5, GRCC 2
The Raiders were held scoreless until the 6th inning when Joey Hysell launched a two-run homer. GRCC managed just five hits, with Peter Heintz collecting three of them. Canyen Veldhouse took the loss, allowing five earned runs while striking out seven.

Game 2: Mid Michigan 11, GRCC 5
GRCC never led in the second game, which marked their third straight loss. Jack Lockwood had three hits, and JT TenEyck added two hits and three RBIs. Case Hennig suffered his first loss of the season, allowing three earned runs over five innings while striking out six.
