Mar. 11, 2025, CALEDONIA, Mich. – The Grand Rapids Community College baseball team earned a big win on Tuesday, defeating 25th-ranked Kellogg Community College 5-3 in the first game of a doubleheader in Caledonia. However, the Raiders fell 8-4 in the second game against Davenport University's junior varsity squad.
Game 1: GRCC 5, Kellogg CC 3
GRCC (2-10) took control early, scoring four runs in the third inning to build a 4-0 lead over Kellogg CC (8-6). The Raiders held that advantage until the bottom of the sixth, when Kellogg's offense broke through with a three-run double, cutting the deficit to 4-3.
Freshman reliever Sam Schmuker, a Rockford native, entered the game and shut down the rally, preserving GRCC's lead. The Raiders added an insurance run in the seventh when Ty Sandwick doubled and was driven in by Joey Hysell's RBI single, making it 5-3.
Schmuker continued his strong outing in the bottom of the seventh, securing his second save of the season. Freshman Kyler Larson (1-1) earned the win, pitching five scoreless innings while striking out seven.
Offensively, Sandwick led GRCC with three hits, while Hysell added two. Xavier Allen and Jack Lockwood each contributed a hit to round out the Raiders' seven-hit effort.
Game 2: Davenport JV 8, GRCC 4
The Raiders jumped out to a fast start in Game 2, scoring three runs in the first two innings. However, Davenport responded with three runs of their own in the bottom of the second to tie the game.
Sandwick scored in the third to give GRCC a brief 4-3 lead, but the Raiders' bats went cold from there. Davenport's JV squad took over, scoring five unanswered runs to claim an 8-4 victory.
Lockwood had a solid game at the plate, collecting two of GRCC's seven hits and swiping a base. Chad Fisher, Jr. chipped in with a double, while Cannon Paul drove in two runs.
