Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

McKellar and Agema with career nights to lead Raiders to a sweep at Kellogg

Feb. 5, 2025, BATTLE CREEK, Mich. – Olivia McKellar and Jack Agema had career nights to help Grand Rapids Community College's basketball teams earn key conference wins Wednesday night, sweeping Kellogg Community College in an MCCAA Western Conference doubleheader. The women's team pulled away for a 62-46 victory, while the men's team battled back for a 95-89 win.

Women's Game: GRCC 62, Kellogg 46

GRCC's women's team (6-10, 4-4) started slow, falling behind 9-3 to Kellogg (9-10, 3-5). But a late first-quarter surge flipped the momentum. Tianna Daye buried a three-pointer with 38 seconds left, giving the Raiders their first lead at 14-13. Kellogg quickly responded with a three from Imani McCray, but Tatyana Hardiman hit a buzzer-beating layup to tie the game at 16-16 after one.

Hardiman opened the second quarter with another three-pointer, and the Raiders never looked back. They extended their lead to as many as 23 points, fueled by hot shooting from deep and dominant rebounding.

Key Performers:

  • McKellar led all scorers with a career-high 21 points on 8-of-12 shooting, including an impressive 5-of-6 from three-point range.
  • Daye contributed 12 points and seven rebounds.
  • Hardiman filled the stat sheet with seven points, seven rebounds, and two steals.
  • Ava Schultz pulled down a team-high eight rebounds, adding six points.
  • Averi Peot recorded six points and a game-high five assists.

The Raiders' defense held Kellogg to just 17.6% (3-of-17) from three, while GRCC shot 39.3% (11-of-28) from beyond the arc.

Men's Game: GRCC 95, Kellogg 89

The GRCC men's team (17-6, 4-4) overcame a rollercoaster game, fending off a strong second-half surge from Kellogg (12-7, 3-5).

Both teams struggled offensively in the first half, but GRCC held a 39-30 lead at the break, thanks to back-to-back three-pointers from Jack Agema in the final 30 seconds.

Kellogg stormed out of halftime with a 23-4 run, taking its largest lead at 53-43 with 14:35 to go. But GRCC answered emphatically, rattling off a 16-0 run to reclaim the lead for good with 11:44 remaining.

Key Performers:

  • Agema had a career night, scoring 24 points on 5-of-9 from three, while also dishing out a game-high six assists.
  • Tyran Thomas dominated inside, finishing with 22 points, nine rebounds, and five steals.
  • Zeekeal Jackson was a force on both ends, posting 20 points, five assists, and five steals.
  • Marshaun Flakes added 16 points.

GRCC's ability to move the ball and force turnovers was the difference. The Raiders doubled Kellogg in assists (20-10), committed eight fewer turnovers (14-23), and recorded six more steals (15-9).
