GRCC's softball team stays perfect on the year, improving to 4-0

Women's and Men's basketball lose DH vs. Lansing, and the baseball team suffers loss at Pensacola

Feb. 25, 2025, GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Grand Rapids Community College had a busy Tuesday across multiple sports, with mixed results. While both basketball teams fell at home to Lansing Community College in their regular season finales, the softball team continued its undefeated run with two wins in Myrtle Beach, and the baseball team suffered a tough loss on the road.

Softball: Raiders Stay Unbeaten at Fastpitch Dreams Classic

The softball team improved to 4-0 with two more victories at the Fastpitch Dreams Classic in North Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.

Game 1: GRCC 2, Southeastern CC-Whiteville 1 (Box Score)

Freshman Libby VanFleet was dominant, allowing just one hit—a leadoff triple in the first inning—and striking out five.

The Raiders tied the game in the fourth with a Paige Arthur sacrifice fly and took the lead in the fifth on an RBI double by Grace Chisek.

Three of GRCC's five hits were doubles, recorded by Natalee Beck, Lillian Klop, and Chisek.

Game 2: GRCC 16, Vermont State University-Lyndon 4 (5 Innings) (Box Score)

The Raiders trailed 3-2 after two and a half innings but responded with a nine-run third and a five-run fourth to secure the run-rule win.

Lillian Klop earned her second win of the season in 2.2 innings of relief, striking out six and walking just one.

The offense exploded with 16 hits, including three each by Kalani Stowe, Chisek, and Madison Miller.

Stowe was a force on the bases, stealing four bases and hitting her first home run of the season—an inside-the-park homer.

Baseball: Raiders Fall to Pensacola State College

The Raiders baseball continued its early-season challenges against NJCAA Division I opponents, falling 13-1 in five innings at Pensacola State College.

Four errors contributed to the loss, with only six of the 13 runs being earned.

Kyle O'Hearn started the game, with Landon pitching in relief.

The Raiders recorded six hits, including doubles from Haiden Noakes and JT TenEyck.

GRCC (1-6) now heads north to Cuthbert, Georgia, for a doubleheader against Andrew College on Wednesday, with Game 1 set for noon.

Women's Basketball: Raiders Fall to No. 15 Lansing CC (Box Score)

GRCC (10-12, 8-6) saw its three-game win streak snapped with a 71-40 home loss to No. 15-ranked Lansing CC (25-4, 14-0).

The Raiders started strong, scoring the first five points, but LCC responded with a 12-0 run and never looked back.

GRCC struggled offensively, shooting a season-low 18% from the field (11-for-61) and tying its second-lowest point total of the season.

Tianna Daye led the Raiders with 13 points and 5 rebounds.

Averi Poet grabbed a team-high nine rebounds.

Tia Richard and Tatyana Hardiman each contributed seven points.

Next Up:

The Raiders finished fourth in the conference and will play Southwestern Michigan College next Tuesday in the first round of Districts. If they win, they will face Mid Michigan College on March 7.

Men's Basketball: Tough Loss on Sophomore Night (Box Score)

GRCC (18-11, 5-9) also lost at home, 114-78, to Lansing CC (17-12, 9-5).

Like the women's team, the Raiders led 5-0 early before LCC took control.

GRCC shot just 34.5% from the field (its second-lowest mark of the season) and 50% from the free-throw line (tied for its lowest).

17 different Raiders saw action, including five sophomores who all started on Sophomore Night.

Sophomore Performances:

  • Mason Wilcox – Season-high 14 points, including 4-for-4 from three-point range.
  • Javon Golson – Game-high and season-high 13 rebounds, plus six points.
  • Basir Neely, JD DeGroot, and Jack Agema – Combined for 25 points, three blocks, and five steals.

Next Up:

The Raiders finished fifth in the conference and will play Marian University-Ancilla next Tuesday in the first round of Districts. If they win, they will face the winner of Bay College vs. Delta College.
