Nov. 6, 2025, GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The 13th-ranked Grand Rapids Community College volleyball team continued its dominant postseason run Thursday, sweeping Mott Community College 3-0 (25-16, 25-13, 25-22) in the opening round of the NJCAA Great Lakes District B Tournament at the Ford Fieldhouse.
The win improves GRCC to 22-2 overall and extends its incredible winning streak to 20 matches, coming just five days after claiming the program's 12th MCCAA Championship. Mott ends the day 22-14 and will play Friday at 1 p.m., while the Raiders advance to the winners bracket final to face Southwestern Michigan College at 3 p.m.
The first set was tightly contested early, tied at 10-10 before freshman Ella Thayer served GRCC to eight straight points to open an 18-10 lead. The Raiders maintained control the rest of the way for a 25-16 win.
GRCC's offense caught fire in the second set, hitting a match-high .368 en route to a 25-13 victory. Mott pushed back in the third, keeping things close until Taylor Kik's 16th kill of the night sealed the sweep, 25-22.
The Raiders hit .270 for the match, while recording five service aces and six team blocks.
Kik was outstanding on both sides of the ball, tallying 16 kills while hitting .361 and posting a season-high 21 digs. Vanessa Walker contributed eight kills, 16 assists, and eight digs while hitting .368. Ava Tarsi handed out 17 assists, and Kaylee Kranz added 11 kills on .310 hitting. Kirstyn Lothschultz powered the defense at the net with five blocks to go along with nine kills, while Cece Huizingh anchored the back row with 14 digs and two aces.
GRCC will look to keep its postseason momentum rolling Friday afternoon against Southwestern Michigan College, with the winner advancing to Saturday's district championship match and a berth in the NJCAA Division II National Tournament in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
