Raiders basketball teams split road doubleheader vs. Glen Oaks

Jan. 25, 2025, CENTREVILLE, Mich. – The Grand Rapids Community College basketball teams split their MCCAA-West doubleheader against Glen Oaks Community College on Saturday. The women's team earned a hard-fought 58-47 victory, while the men's team saw their 13-game win streak snapped in a 102-77 defeat.

Women's Recap: Raiders Hold Off Vikings for Key Win

The Raiders women's basketball team (4-8, 2-2 MCCAA-West) continued its recent resurgence, winning for the third time in five games by defeating the Glen Oaks Vikings (5-14, 1-3). The Raiders took a 28-19 lead into halftime, but Glen Oaks came storming back in the third quarter, briefly claiming the lead with 5:43 left in the period.

However, an Ava Schultz three-pointer in the final minute of the third quarter put the Raiders ahead for good. GRCC's disciplined play, including just 10 turnovers (the team's second-lowest total this season), helped secure the win.

The Raiders' ability to capitalize on turnovers also proved pivotal, outscoring the Vikings 14-0 in points off turnovers.

Key Performers:

  • Tia Richard: Dominated with 17 points, 6 rebounds, 3 assists, 2 blocks, and 3 steals, playing all 40 minutes.
  • Ava Schultz: The reigning MCCAA-West Player of the Week was just shy of her third consecutive double-double, finishing with 12 points, 9 rebounds, and 3 steals.
  • Tianna Daye: Contributed 7 points and 7 rebounds.
  • Averi Peot: Added 6 points, 7 rebounds, 2 steals, and a block.

Men's Recap: Raiders' Win Streak Ends in Tough Loss

The Raiders men's basketball team (16-3, 3-1 MCCAA-West) suffered its first loss since November 16, as Glen Oaks (11-8, 4-1) delivered a commanding performance. The Vikings shot an impressive 50.6% from the field and excelled at the free throw line, making 85% of their attempts compared to GRCC's 56%.

Glen Oaks also controlled the boards, out rebounding GRCC 50-40, and limited the Raiders to just 40% shooting.
