Sept. 28, 2024 – The Grand Rapids Community College volleyball team completed a perfect 3-0 northern trip after a sweep over Bay College on Saturday. Meanwhile, the softball team also won three games and the men's soccer team picked up a big road victory down in Indiana. The men's cross country team also was in action, faring well at the Calvin Knight Invitational.
Volleyball Recap
The 17th ranked Raiders (8-2, 5-0) won its sixth match in a row after its third straight sweep on its annual northern trip, which included stops to Petoskey, Gaylord, Alpena, Escanaba and Mackinaw City.
GRCC hit .300 on the trip including a season best .405 on Sept. 27 against Alpena Community College. Ten of its 17 players also hit at least .300.
Taylor Kik led the team with 25 kills, followed by Lizzie MacIntosh with 19, Lilly Peterson 15 and Ella Gapczynski 10. Meredith Simmons, Carle Bruggema and Kik each had seven aces. Ava Tarsi led the team with 41 assists, and Bruggema and Sami Baker combined for 46. Kik led the team with 23 digs, followed by Sylvia Peterson with 18, and Cece Huizingh and Simmons had 13. Gapczynski led the team with nine blocks.
GRCC will look to extend it's win streak and stay unbeaten in the conference when they take on Muskegon Community College, Tueday, Oct. 1, at the Ford Fieldhouse.
Men's XC Recap
The No. 10 ranked Raiders finished eighth out of 11 teams at the Calvin Knight Invitational. The team competed against nine four-year schools along with Southwestern Michigan College, whose in the same conference as GRCC.
Freshman
Isaac Skinner (28:10) finished a top all 11 Raider runners, finishing 66th out of 140 total competitors. Sophomore
Joseph VanderKooi (28:51) finished in 77th place.
The five man pack of John DiPiazza (29:45), Sam Pugh (29:45), Micah Nagel (29:54), Haegan Land (30:03) and Austin Winkle (30:07) finished respectively in 95th, 97th, 99th and 100th.
Dannion Simmet (31:28), Reece Ondersma (31:44), Nate Fehey (31:51) and Sam Spoors (40:30) rounded out the Raider runners.
After three straight weeks of competition, the guys will get a well deserved week off and won't race again until Oct. 12 in Muskegon.
Softball Recap
The Raiders improved to 11-4-1 after three wins on Saturday at the GRCC Invitational at Bicentennial Park in Byron Center.
In game one, GRCC pounded out 11 hits in a 10-0 five-inning win over Cornerstone University JV. Maddi Miller led the team with three hits and three RBI. Paige Arthur hit her first collegiate home run. Abby Vandenberg collected two hits, including a double, and three RBI. Macey Springer picked up the win, allowing just three hits while striking out three.
GRCC played Aquinas College JV in it's last two games, defeating the Saints 8-0 and 8-5. Grace Chisek drove in four runs on two hits, including a home run to led the Raiders in game one. Jos VanderHart added three hits in the opener and Libby picked up the win, giving up just two hits over six innings.
In the nightcap, GRCC beat the Saints 8-5 and Chisek was a perfect 4-for-4 from the plate including two doubles and another home run. Kalani Stowe had a stellar performance as well going 3-for-3 from the plate and stole three bases. She also picked up the win, fanning eight Saints in 6.1 innings. Grace Salley also had a home run for the Raiders.
Overall, the Raiders scored 26 runs, had 39 hits and committed just one fielding error.
The team hits the field again this Wednesday, Oct. 2, at Belknap Park with a doubleheader against Aquinas JV beginning at 3:00pm.
Men's Soccer Recap
The men's soccer team made it seven straight games without a loss after a 1-0 win at Marian-Ancilla on Saturday.
Christian Diaz scored the loan goal - his fourth of the year - on a header midway through the first half. Rodrigo Perez assisted Diaz on the cross, his second assist of the year.
The Raiders improved to 5-3-2 (2-0-1) and resume conference play on Oct. 4 vs. Muskegon Community College.
