Men's soccer team dominates in 7-0 over Jackson College

Volleyball team wins a thriller in five sets over Aquinas

Sept. 11, 2024, GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Grand Rapids Community College's men's soccer team and the women's volleyball team both had exciting victories on Wednesday, one in dominating fashion and the other in a thrilling fashion.

Soccer Recap

The men's soccer team (1-3-1) picked up its first win of the season by defeating Jackson College 7-0 at the Midwest United Complex, with three goals in the first half and another four in the second.  The Raiders stingy defense only allowed one shot all day, while its offense managed 34, and 17 on goal.

Cameron Burnash started the scoring with his first collegiate goal in the 19th minute.  Sophomore Elijah Maas scored the first of his two goals in the 24th minute.  His other goal made it 5-0 at the 60-minute mark. Maas also had an assist in the game.

Cristian Diaz, Sean Gieske, Elvin Bajric and Rodrigo Perez also added goals for the Raiders.  Samuel Himmelspach and Gieske provided the other two assists. 

GRCC's next game is Sat. Sept. 14 at Cuyahoga Community College, in Highland Hills, OH.

Volleyball Recap

In a packed Hunsberger Arena, the 17th ranked Raider volleyball team (3-2) prevailed in five sets by beating Aquinas College JV, 25-22, 21-25, 25-23, 16-25, 17-15.

In the final set, the Raiders were down 11-5 and 13-9, but a combo block from Lilly Peterson and Taylor Kik, and then another one from Peterson and Jeanette Desser got the Raiders to within one. On the next possession, and a long rally, Peterson's kill would nod it up at 13 a piece.  

With the score tied at 15, Kik had back-to-back kills to give her team the victory.  The freshman outside would lead the team with 16 kills and added 13 digs and three blocks.

Right side hitter Allie McGlothlen added 10 kills and Peterson and Sophia Ritsema each had seven. Peterson also had a team-high eight blocks.

Meredith Simmons had six kills and 14 digs in her Raider debut.

Libero's Cece Huizingh and Sylvia Peterson combined for 30 digs.

GRCC's next opponent is at Delta College on Sept. 17.  It will be the team's first conference match of the season.
