April 14, 2024, GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -- The Grand Rapids Community College baseball team stayed hot after sweeping Muskegon Community College on Sunday, one of which was in walk-off fashion; 3-2 and then 9-5.
The Raiders (23-9, 12-0) have now won 16 in row since last losing on March 15.
Through four innings only one player had reached second base, until Muskegon's Austin Fowler singled in the fifth and then scored on an RBI single by Brandon Butkus. The Jayhawks hit a solo home run in the top of the sixth and had a 2-0 advantage going in the bottom of the inning.
The Raiders rally started from a lead off single by sophomore Trevin Laming and then two batters later, Camden Seth hit a two-run single to tie the game.
The game would end up going to extras and in the bottom of the eighth, Seth hit a one-out double and two batters later, pinch runner Collin Fridsma scored the game winning run after an RBI single by sophomore Aaron Bess.
Ohlen Bond (3-0) picked up the win in relief after a superb performance by Colton Blankstrom who allowed just one earned run while striking out eight and walking none.
In the nightcap, the Raiders struck first and never looked back winning 9-5. Bess and Xavier Allen combined for four hits and three RBI.
Canyen Veldhouse (5-1) picked up the victory, allowing zero runs while striking out five.
The softball team dropped its opening game 6-1 and nearly rallied back for a win in game two, but fell 15-7 in nine innings.
Muskegon jumped out to a 6-0 lead after two innings, but the Raiders cut the lead in half scoring a run in the third, fifth and six innings. The Jayhawks increased its lead to 7-3 going into the bottom of the seventh, but GRCC wouldn't surrender. Emily Obenauf hit a two-run double and then Amara Kline hit a two-run single to tie the game at seven.
Both teams were held scoreless in the eighth. In the ninth, the Jayhawks would score eight runs and then retire the Raiders in order to finally end the 3-hour plus game.
Five players had two hits for the Raiders in the nightcap; Obenauf, Kline, Maddi Miller, Britney Cisler and Alyssa Wierenga.
Both teams are scheduled to take on Aquinas College's junior varsity squad this week before heading to Alpena Community College Friday for another conference match up.
