Bond picks up first win of season

March 4, 2024, ROCKFORD, Mich. -- In thrilling fashion, the Grand Rapids Community College baseball team defeated Aquinas College JV 5-4 it its first game back from its southern trip on Monday.

Joey Hysell started the scoring off in the top of second by hitting his first home run of the season, a two-run shot down the left field line.  He drove in Tommy Reid who began the inning with a double to right-center.

Camden Seth led the next inning off with a double of his own and just one batter later would score after an RBI single from Aaron Bess.

Aquinas scored it's first run of the game in the bottom of the third and would tie the game up with two more runs in the bottom of the sixth.

GRCC responded back in the top of the eighth with Bess scoring on an error and Dylan Nguyen scoring on an RBI single from Xavier Allen.

Aquinas got one back in the bottom of the eighth, but stranded two runners.  In the bottom of the ninth, Aquinas threatened again, putting runners on second and third with two outs.  GRCC then went to its bullpen and Logan VanSurksum came in to strike out the final batter and pick up his first save of the season.

Andrew Pohlmann got the start for the Raiders, pitching four strong innings and only giving up three hits.  Ohlen Bond picked up the win in relief going 4.2 innings and striking out four batters.
