Box Score 4 March 29, 2024, UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. -- The Grand Rapids Community College baseball team completed its four-game series sweep against Delta College on Friday, while the softball team fell just short of the sweep, losing by one in its final game.
After shutting out Delta 12-0 and 10-0 in the first two games of the series on Thursday, the baseball team picked up 7-2 and 9-4 wins, improving to 14-9 overall while having winning 13 of its last 14 games.
GRCC got on the board quickly after RBI's from Chad Fisher, Aaron Bess and Dylan Nguyen and never looked back. The Raiders scored three more in the third and another in the seventh.
Bess and Cam Seth each tallied two of the teams eight hits.
Colton Blankstrom picked up the win, allowing just four hits over five innings of work.
In the nightcap, GRCC jumped out to a 2-0 lead after one, but Delta came back to take a 4-2 lead. The Raiders responded with a five-run fourth inning and tacked on two more in the seventh to defeat the Pioneers 9-4.
Trevin Laming, Ty Sandwick and Fisher all had doubles and combined for seven of the team's eight RBI.
Logan VanSurksum picked up the win in relief, pitching the final 4.1 innings and allowing just two hits.
The softball team had its five game winning streak snapped after dropping an 8-7 decision in its final game of their series. The Raiders won 12-8 in the opener and run-ruled the Pioneers 12-4 and 15-2 on Thursday.
GRCC's bats stayed hot in the doubleheader, making it six straight games with 10 or more hits. The Raiders totaled 27 on the day, including five from Samara Kolehouse and four each from Emily Obenauf and Britney Cisler. Cisler also hit her first career home run in the sixth inning of game one that put the Raiders in the lead for good and to top the day off, another two-run dinger in the nightcap.
Vanessa Hewitt also hit a two-run blast just two batters after Cisler's homer in game two.
GRCC's baseball team will be back in action Apr. 2 against Lansing Community College. Both teams will then begin its season series with Bay College at home on Apr. 5.
