Oct. 5, 2024, GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The No. 4 ranked Grand Rapids Community College women's cross country team continued to roll, winning its second straight invitational in Dixon, Illinois on Saturday. The women's soccer team also had a big win against conference foe Muskegon Community College on Friday, while the women's volleyball and softball teams also picked up a few victories themselves.
Women's Soccer Recap

The women's soccer team got back on the winning track after a 2-1 win against the visiting Jayhawks of Muskegon Community College improving their record to 4-6-1 overall and 2-2 in the conference. The win keeps the Raiders in the hunt for a regional berth this year.
After a scoreless first half, GRCC's
Claira Deyoung got the Raiders on the board with a goal in the 49th minute. Teammate
Ava Simonson made it 2-0 in the 56th minute after a double assist from Alex Ellsworth and Emily Krampitz.
Muskegon would finally get on board in the 73rd minute, but the GRCC defense wouldn't surrender another goal.
The Raiders are scheduled to have a scrimmage on Oct. 6 before returning to conference play on Oct. 8 against St. Clair County Community College.
Women's Cross Country Recap
The No. 4 ranked Raiders continue to dominate their competition after their second straight victory, this time at the Skyhawk Invitational hosted by Sauk Valley Community College.
Elicia Land, 20:21,
Anna Tubbergen, 20:23, and
Olivia Lemke, 20:46 finished 1-2-3 for the Raiders. Teammate Gloria Gaston was not far behind, finishing in fifth with a time of 21:20. Mariana Zaragoza (23:07) rounded out the Raiders scoring with a 14th place finish.
The Raiders finished with 25 points, which was 34 points better than second place Carl Sandburg College.
Emily Adamy had a PR of 24:44 to finish in 19th place. Estelle Rockhold (25:14) finished 21st and Chloe Rooks was 26th with a time of 26:22.
"Our team did an exceptional job today and our experiences will propel us to race even better at our next race in Muskegon on Oct. 12," said head coach Sharon Becker. "We know that the end goal is getting the job done at regionals which will lead us to our ultimate goal, a berth in the national championships."
Volleyball Recap
The No. 17 ranked volleyball team also continued to roll, with two more sweeps in day one of the annual Raider challenge. The Raiders are now 11-2 on the year after defeating Oakland Community College 25-16, 25-13, 25-14 and then Glen Oaks Community College 25-17, 25-20, 25-20.
In it's opener, GRCC set a team record with all 18 players in the scoring column. Thirteen players had at least one kill, led by
Taylor Kik with seven. Eight players had at least one ace, led by
Cece Huizingh with three. Ten players had at least one block, led by
Lizzie MacIntosh, Lilly Peterson and Jeanette Desser all with three.
It was a similar story in the later match against Glen Oaks, with every player contributing in the victory. Kik and Peterson led the team in kills with six and former Rockford Rams Meredith Simmons and MacIntosh each had five. Simmons and Sami Baker led the team with six digs and and Huizingh once again led the team in service aces with four.
The Raiders will take on two more opponents in the final day of the Raider Challenge on Sunday, at noon and then again at 4pm.
Softball Recap
GRCC's softball team (15-6-1) finished a busy Saturday 2-2 at the Canton Sports Center tournament.
After losing the Rochester Christian University 4-2 in their opener, the Raiders responded to defeat Macomb Community College 6-3 and then Madonna University 10-7. They nearly finished the day off with another win, but fell just short in a 9-8 loss to the Brampton (CA) Blazers.
The Raiders had 35 hits on the day and were led by freshmen Grace Chisek who had seven hits, including three home runs. Chisek also had four RBI and three stolen bases.
Sophomore catcher Maddi Miller had a day as well with five hits, five RBI and a stolen base.
Freshman Natalee Beck had four hits, including two doubles and four RBI.
Kalani Stowe hit her first collegiate home run, and added five RBI and two more of her team high 18 steals this fall.
Paige Arthur hit her second home run of the season and Lilly Klop was the Raiders best pitcher on the day, with eight strikeouts and no base on balls.
GRCC returns home on Oct. 9 for a double header against Aquinas College JV.
