Jan. 31, 2024, GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Grand Rapids Community College's basketball teams are now winners of two in a row after sweeping the visitors from Delta College on Wednesday night; 77-68 in the women's game and 82-79 in the men's.
It was a career night for the two-sport star from Gaylord in game one of the doubleheader. After a slow start, scoring just two points in the first quarter, freshman forward Ava Schultz connected on six of her next seven attempts putting the Raiders up a game-high 13 points midway through the third quarter. Schultz would go on to score a career-high 27 points on 9-of-16 from the floor, 5-of-9 from downtown and a perfect 4-of-4 from the charity stripe. She also added six rebounds, three assists, four steals and had zero turnovers.
Tia Richard chipped in with 19 points and a career-high eight assists. Sophia Modderman and Kaylie VanDerHulst each had 13 rebounds.
In the nightcap, the men's game came down to the wire. With the game tied at 73, Tristan McRoberts scored the go-ahead layup for GRCC and Delta was accessed a technical foul on the play. McRoberts sank two free throws to put the Raiders up four, and GRCC would hold on to an 82-79 victory. He would finish the game with 14 points and a game-high five assists.
Darrell Belcher led the Raiders with 20 points and added eight rebounds, four assists and two steals. Logan Dunbar finished with a career-high 18 points and eight rebounds.
GRCC hits the road on Saturday in a doubleheader at North Central Michigan College.
