Jan. 20, 2024, ALPENA, Mich. – The Grand Rapids Community College women's basketball team blanked Alpena Community College in the third quarter and cruised to a 57-35 win on Saturday.
Meanwhile, in the earlier game, the men's team lost to the Lumberjacks 94-70 despite career highs in points from Jovante Jones,18 and Dominic McRoberts, 9.
After trading baskets in the first half and leading by just five, GRCC's women's team outscored Alpena 20-0 in the third. The Raiders led by as many as 29 points.
Tia Richard led the team with 15 points and added a season-high four steals.
Ava Schultz had her second straight double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds while also having a season-high four steals. Sophia Modderman had her third straight game of 10 or more rebounds finishing with 12. Kaylie VanDerHulst added a career-high 14 boards.
GRCC had a season low 11 turnovers while Alpena had 22 in the game.
The Raider men shot just 18.2 percent from three point range, its third lowest percentage of the season, and it didn't help that Alpena shot better from the field than any other opponent this season, at a 55.7 percent clip.
GRCC finishes its northern trip with a doubleheader at Bay College on Monday.
