Box Score 2 Aug. 25, 2023, TUCSON, AZ. – The Grand Rapids Community College volleyball cruised to victory against Glendale Community College and then defeated Southeastern Community College in the nightcap in a whirl win finish.
In the first match of the day at the Pima Community College tournament, the No. 6 ranked Raiders dominated the Gauchos of Glendale in straight sets, while only trailing by one twice in the entire match; 25-20, 25-11, 25-21.
Freshman middle blocker Lilly Peterson was nearly unstoppable finishing with 13 kills and just one attack error with a team-high five blocks.
Braelyn Berry finished with a team-high 14 kills and added three aces and seven digs on her birthday.
GRCC combined for 37 kills while hitting a solid .260 for the match. They also had a season-high 12 aces and just two service errors.
In the later match against Southeastern (Iowa) Community College, it looked as if the match would go five sets, but the Raiders weren't going to let that happen. With GRCC up two sets to one, Southeastern would led wire-to-wire until the Raiders stormed back from a 23-19 deficit to score five in a row and take their first lead. SCC stopped the run to tie it back up at 24, but Sophia Ritsema and Joslynne Bogner combined on a block to give the Raiders back the lead. Vienna Koenigsknecht finished off the match with the team's 13th ace.
Peterson finished with 14 kills and three blocks while Berry totaled 13 kills, 12 digs, two blocks and a team-high five aces.
Koenigsknecht led the defense with 18 digs and Lizzie MacIntosh had 14 digs to go with her seven kills.
GRCC will be in action next on Sept. 12 in the teams conference opener against arch rival Muskegon Community College. The match will be at GRCC's Hunsberger Arena at 6:30 p.m.
