Aug. 19, 2023, SUMMIT TOWNSHIP, Mich. – The Grand Rapids Community College men's soccer team made history Saturday by defeating Jackson College 6-0, in its first ever game.

Also in action for the first time, the women's soccer team nearly came out victorious themselves, but lost 3-2 to Jackson, and the volleyball completed their first tournament of the year with a 2-2 record.

Head coach Damiecko Smith was extremely pleased in the teams first game of the year.  "We think we can compete with any team in the conference, and we intend to come for the throne," said Smith. "But more humbly, we are just thankful for the opportunity to represent the community of Grand Rapids as a soccer team.  We have a lot of work to do if we plan on being one of the more competitive teams in the conference, but we are excited for the challenge."

It took just a little over 10 minutes before GRCC's first ever goal was scored.  Striker, Mohamed Tamour earned the goal after the assist from Chase Laarman. Tamour led the team with six of the team's 29 shots on goal.

GRCC out shot Jackson 45 to 9 and just five of the shots were on goal for the Jets, all stopped by goal keeper Brett Miller.

Elijah Maas, Lucas Freriks, Alexander Lagazo, Cole Drozdowski and Jaret Jaramillo were the other GRCC goal scorers.  Xander Fredericksen led the team with two assists.

GRCC's women's team was led by forward Allyson Seevers who had eight shots on goal and one goal scored.  Teammate Samantha Hunting scored the other goal on a penalty kick, putting her team on the board 70 minutes into the game.  Jessa Davis scored the game winner for Jackson with 10 minutes remaining.

"Sometimes in futbol you don't get the result you want, but you get the result you need," said head coach Jason Hill.  "We know we have talent, we know we can compete.  We just have to trust the process and continue forward.  Trust in the ourselves and the team and here we come."

The No. 6 ranked volleyball team finished with another split on Saturday in their tournament in Rockford, Illinois to even their record at 2-2.

All four of GRCC's opponents were ranked in the top-15 as the Raiders defeated Moraine Valley Community College and Illinois Central College while losing to Kirkwood Community College and Gulf Coast State College.

Freshman middle Lilly Peterson led the Raiders offensive attack with 47 kills including a match-high 21 against Illinois Central. Lizzie MacIntosh had 45 kills, eight aces and team-high 67 digs. Braelyn Berry finished with 40 kills, seven aces, 47 digs.  Sophia Ritsema and Ava Schultz combined for 43 kills and 18 blocks.  Carle Bruggema had 22 digs and five aces to go with her team-high 110 assists.  Sophomore captain Vienna Koenigsknecht added 59 digs and six aces.

Both soccer programs will be back on the road on the 30th to take on Kellogg Community College, while the volleyball team takes on four teams over four days next week on its trip to Arizona.
