Dec. 16, 2023, GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Lansing Community College proved to be too much for both Grand Rapids Community College basketball teams despite career-high games from Ava Schultz, Avery Jirous and Spencer Willman.
In the women's game, GRCC was just 12 of 49 from the floor and had 34 turnovers, losing to their former conference foe, 65-37. They had beaten Lansing in their past nine meetings.
Schultz, playing in just her third game since joining the team after a successful season on the volleyball team, set career highs with 17 points, nine rebounds and two blocks.
Jirous, a sophomore point guard, also put up career highs with 12 rebounds and six assists. She also added eight points.
In the men's game, the Raiders couldn't cool off the hot shooting Stars, losing by a final of 111-82, to drop to 7-6 on the season.
LCC shot 51 percent overall, 43 percent from behind the arc, and 92 percent from the free throw line. They also had a season-low five turnovers.
Willman was a spark off the bench for the Raiders, finishing with a career and team-high 18 points on 8-of-13 from the field, including back-to-back threes.
Darrell Belcher also had a solid game, with his third double-double of the year, scoring 17 points and grabbing 11 rebounds. Belcher is second on the team in scoring, averaging 12.4 per contest.
Both teams will have the next three weeks off to prepare for their next opponent, Southwestern Michigan College on Jan. 6.
