Nov. 3, 2023, PORT HURON, Mich. – After a thrilling four-set victory over Mott College, the Grand Rapids Community College volleyball team is heading back to the regional championship finals on Saturday.
Meanwhile, in Illinois, the men's basketball team won its second straight game and the women's team dropped its season opener.
The No. 6 ranked Raiders downed the Bears 25-20, 25-19, 20-25, 25-17 to advance to the finals for the eighth year in a row.
Outsides Lizzie MacIntosh and Braelyn Berry combined for 39 kills in the victory, including a record-high 10 by MacIntosh in the second set alone.
MacIntosh finished with a season-high 20 kills, hitting a team-best .319 and added 14 digs, an ace and a block.
Berry had a season-high 19 kills and added 13 digs, two aces and a block.
It was a milestone night for sophomore libero Vienna Koenigsknecht whose career-high 26 digs gave her over 600 in her career.
GRCC (25-3) is now just one win away from a trip back to nationals in Iowa. They will await the winner of the Lake Michigan College/Mott College match in the championship at 1:30 p.m.
Back in Des Plaines, Ill. the women's basketball team suffered a tough 102-56 loss to Oakton Community College while the men's basketball improved to 2-0 with a 102-74 over Oakton.
Oliver McKellar led the women's team with 19 points. Tianna Daye had 15 and Kaylie VanDerHulst added 13.
The men's team was led by Mason Wilcox who hit seven three-pointers and scored a game-high 27 points in just 12 minutes. Joe Francis was second on the team with 18 points.
The men's basketball team will take on Harper College Saturday at 3 p.m. CT and the women's team doesn't play until Wednesday at Lake Michigan College.
