Nov. 15, 2023, CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa. – The Grand Rapids Community College volleyball team almost made an unbelievable comeback, but fell just short, losing to DMACC in five sets at the NJCAA DII National Championship on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, back in Michigan, the men's basketball team snapped its three-game skid to improve to 4-3 after a 74-71 win at Jackson College.  The women's three-game winning streak came to an end with a 78-46 loss to Jackson.

The No. 6 ranked volleyball team (26-4) got off to a slow start, losing the first two sets, 25-14, 25-17.  But the offense came alive in the third set, hitting .361, and the Raiders were right back in the match after a 25-20 win.  The fourth set was all Raiders as they shutdown the Bears 25-19.  GRCC jumped out to a 3-2 lead in the final set, but the Bears went on a 4-0 run and never looked back, winning 15-11.

The good news is that the Raiders season isn't over.  If the team wins out it will finish in third place.  They will battle either Sauk Valley or Wallace State tomorrow at 4:30 EST.

Conference player of the year, Braelyn Berry, led all players with 19 kills against just three hitting errors, while adding 23 digs.

Lilly Peterson hit a team-high .348 with 10 kills on 23 attempts. Lizzie MacIntosh added 15 kills and 14 digs.  Vienna Koenigsknecht led the team with 24 digs.

Back in Jackson, Mich. the women's basketball team got a game-high 23 points from Tianna Daye, but dropped to 3-2 after the loss.  Daye was recently named the conference's player of the week.

The men's team fared much better picking up a much needed win thanks to a game-high 20 points from Joe Francis and 19 points from Darrell Belcher. Tristan McRoberts also had a solid game with eight points, 11 rebounds and three steals.

Both team's will be back in action at GRCC on Friday with the women tipping off first at 5:30 p.m.
