Griffioen Scores Go Ahead Bucket and Blocks Two Shots in Last 13 Seconds to Secure a Raiders Victory

Grand Rapids, Mich. -- Just as it did in their last meeting with Lansing Community College, it would come down to the final possession, and once again the Raiders would prevail.  Wednesday nights 58-55 victory made it four in a row for the 12-14 (10-5) Raiders, while the Stars dropped to 11-15 (5-10).  The Raiders are now all alone in third place in the conference with just three games remaining before post season.

GRCC led for nearly the entire game and by as many as 10 in the second half, but the Stars would rally back in the 4th quarter and take a one point lead with 42 seconds left in the game.  Georgia Hill (20 points-5 rebounds-4 steals) scored the go ahead bucket forcing David Glazier's Raiders to call a timeout.  Bethany Chick (Grand Rapids, MI) missed a layup but grabbed her own rebound with 30 seconds remaining and the Raiders would call another time.  Chick would then find a wide open Kendall Griffioen (Hudsonville, MI) who drove to the basket, laying it in with 28 seconds on the clock.

On the next Stars possession, Hill drove to the basket, but Griffioen blocked it out of bounds with 13 ticks left.  Hill then again tried for the go ahead bucket, but Griffioen was there again for her sixth block of game.  This time, Chick would secure the rebound and the Raiders would call their final time out.  The Raiders safely inbounded the ball to Rayven Mondy, who quicky was fouled and made both free throws putting her team up three.  The Stars still had life, but missed a three pointer as time expired.

The Raiders "Big 3" totaled 48 of the Raiders 58 points and 33 of their 52 rebounds. Griffioen (16 points-15 rebounds-6 blocks) and Danielle Lamancusa (15 points-11 rebounds) each recorded their 7th and 8th double-doubles of the year.  Chick nearly had her 15th double-double, totaling 17 points, 7 rebounds and 3 assists. Mondy finished with 8 points, 8 rebounds and 6 assists.

For the game, the Raiders were just 1 of 10 from behind the arc, but still shot 41% from the field while holding the Stars to just 32%.  They outrebounded their opponent for the 16th time this year, 52-30, with 13 of those boards coming on the offensive end helping them to 16 second chance points, compared to just one for the Stars.

The Raiders will try and snap Muskegon Community College's 10 game win streak as they host the Jayhawks on Saturday at 1 PM.  Muskegon is 21-3 and in first place with a 13-2 conference record.  In their last meeting back on January 25th, the Jayhawks won 78-40.  Conference Standings
