Grand Rapids, Mich. -- After snapping their three game win streak on Saturday, the Raiders got back on the winning track with a 20 point victory on Monday night against the Kellogg Bruins, 67-47. With the win, the Raiders improve to 7-12 overall and 5-3 in the conference. The loss drops the Bruins to 11-8 overall and 5-3 in the conference. Both teams are now tied for 3rd place with one game left before the second half of the MCCAA Western Conference schedule begins.
The Bruins got off to leads of 11-2 and 13-7, mostly in part to Audrey De Waters who scored the first 13 points for the visitors from Battle Creek. She would finish with a team high 18 points on 7 of 16 from the field.
A 7-0 Raider run, capped off by two free throws from freshman
Danielle Lamancusa (Rockford, MI) gave the home team the lead back at 14-13 with 2:15 left in the opening quarter. Just 41 seconds later, Lamancusa scored two more points that would give the Raiders the lead for good, 16-15.
A 21-8 second quarter gave the Raiders a convincing 40-23 lead at the half. They would build the lead up to 24 with 6:52 left in the third quarter after one of Rayven Mondy's four 3-point buckets of the game.
Mondy (Kentwood, MI) would finish with 14 points and a team high 7 assists.
After missing her second triple-double of the season on Saturday (just one block short), sophomore center
Kendall Griffioen (Hudsonville, MI) nearly finished with another one again. She ended up with 18 points, 7 rebounds and 9 blocks. Lamancusa (12 points-12 rebounds) and
Beth Chick (Grand Rapids, MI) (13 points-12 rebounds) each picked up double doubles while point guard
Lizzy Palmer (Caledonia, MI) added 6 points, 9 rebounds, 5 assists and 3 steals.
The Raiders have now won four out of their last five, after starting the season 3-11. They will head back on the road Wednesday, January 29th to take on Kalamazoo Valley Community College. The Cougars have struggled recently, losing five in a row after starting 7-6. Game time will be 5:30 pm.
Game Notes
-With her 9 blocks, Griffioen now has 103 on the season. Her 5.5 blocks/game ranks her second in the nation.
NJCAA Statistical Leaders
-Mondy's 7 assists gave her 60 on the year. It was the fourth time the season she has had 5 or more assists.
-Chick now has 11 double-doubles on the season and leads the conference with 11.4 rebounds/game.
