Grand Rapids, Mich. -- The 10th ranked Raider volleyball team remains unbeaten in the conference after two huge road wins last week, defeating Muskegon Community College in a five set thriller and sweeping KVCC in just over an hour of work. With the wins, the Raiders improve to 8-3 and 3-0 in the MCCAA West.
In Tuesday's match at Muskegon, the Raiders took the first and third set 25-20, while MCC won sets two and four 26-24. The Raiders were up 24-23 in both the 2nd and 4th, but the Jayhawks rallied to take the sets by scoring the final three points. In set one, the Raider offense was nearly unstoppable with 13 kills, just one error, for a .444 hitting percentage. Freshman Outside
Annie Holesinger (Rockford, MI) had 5 kills by herself. For the match, the Raiders totaled season high's in kills (57), digs (78) and blocks (8.5). Head Coach Chip Will improved his career record to 36-7 against the Jayhawks, including his team winning 12 of the past 13 matches.
Holesinger tied a career high with 16 kills against Muskegon and added three blocks. Sophomore All-Region outside,
Danielle Johnston (Comstock Park, MI) totaled 12 kills and had season highs of 15 digs and four blocks. Sophomore
Jasmine Wellet (Coldwater, MI) had two aces and a team high 21 digs. Her sister
Jamie Wellet had a team high 3 aces and a season high 13 digs in the victory.
Thursday's match at Kalamazoo Valley got off to a slow start for the Raiders, but they proved they were the better team taking care of business in three, 25-19, 25-21, 25-16. The win marked the 8th straight over KVCC. Their .310 hitting percentage was their third best of the season and their 12 hitting errors was the second lowest of the season.
Johnston shined against the Cougars posting a .400 hitting percentage with 10 kills and just two errors. She also dug 10+ balls for the third straight match, totaling 11, second most after Jasmine's 14. Sophomore
Breanna Wickerink (Lake Odessa, MI) tied a season best with a .455 hitting percentage while adding two blocks, giving her 19 on the season so far. Freshman S/RS,
Jamie Rozell (Grand Rapids, MI) had 20 assists and hit a solid .364.
The Raiders will enjoy a
bye on Tuesday and will resume play on Thursday September 12th at Kellogg Community College. Kellogg is currently 4-3 overall and 1-2 in the conference.
