Summitt Twp, Mich. -- Hallee Breimayer hit one of the biggest shots of her career Tuesday night, a three pointer with 1.1 seconds remaining, lifting her Raiders to a 60-59 victory over the Jackson Jets. The win gives the Raiders another chance at Lake Michigan College on Thursday night in the Semi-Finals of the District Tournament. The loss for the Jets ends their season after finishing a respectable fourth place in the conference.
The Raiders scored the first bucket of the ball game, but the Jets controlled the entire first half, leading by as many as 14 early in the second quarter. The Raiders chipped away at the deficit and got it down to five points before Arjanae Morgan (game high 22 points) hit a shot as the buzzer sounded giving her Jets a 33-26 lead.
Mya Jordan (Kentwood, MI), who scored a team high 19 points in the game totaled 10 points on 5 of 7 shooting in the third quarter. The Raiders outscored the Jets 19 to 12 and it was all tied at 45 heading into the fourth.
A
Kendall Griffioen (Hudsonville, MI) layup with five minutes to go in the game gave the Raiders their biggest lead of the night (56-51), but back came the Jets. A five point run, all by Morgan tied the game for the ninth time, 56-56 with 4:14 left to play.
Mady Miller (Elkhart, IN) went to the line and put the Raiders back up by one with 2:47 remaining, but the Jets Bre'Aira Burton grabbed the rebound after the second free throw and 20 seconds later knocked in a three to give her team the 59-57 edge. It was Burton's only bucket of the night.
The Raiders turned the ball over with 49 seconds to go and Jordan was called for her fifth foul with 27 seconds on the clock. The Raiders were forced to foul as they only had two fouls on the board. They got two fouls on the next couple of inbounds, but on the third inbound,
Emily Pendred's (East Lansing, MI) pressure forced a Jet turnover with 16.4 seconds left.
Put in the same situation they had the last time they played Jackson, the Raiders were put in position to tie or win the ball game with the final shot. Miller would make a great pass to
Hallee Breimayer (Belding, MI) for the deep three that she buried with 1.1 seconds to go. The Raider D stopped the Jets on the final inbounds play and for the second straight year, pulled off the upset on the road in the first round of Districts.
Briemayer finished the game with 11 points, including 3 of 8 from long distance. The sophomore point guard also added a game high 7 assists and 5 rebounds. Pendred nearly had a double double in her 40 minutes of action with 8 points and 17 rebounds, including 8 on the offensive end. Miller finished with 7 points, 4 rebounds and 3 assists.
Up next for the Raiders will be the Red Hawks of Lake Michigan College, whom won the conference this year and are the #1 overall seed in this year's tournament. Game time is set for 7:30 PM on Thursday, March 7th at GRCC. For complete coverage of all the Semi-Final and Championship games (including live video and stats) check out the
