Raiders Miss Out on Opportunity to Clinch Title with Loss to Ancilla

Grand Rapids, Mich. -- The Raiders struggle from the three point line proved costly as the visiting Chargers spoil GRCC's chance at a conference title Saturday afternoon by a final of 91-76.  The loss snaps a five game win streak and they now lead by just a game over Ancilla in conference race with a 21-6 (13-3) record.  The Chargers improve to 19-7 (12-4) with each team having two games remaining.

The Chargers didn't trail the entire game and after a 10-0 run gave them a 12-2 lead with 16:07 left in the first half, they would lead wire to wire the rest of the way.  A Sammie Ryans (Kentwood, MI) put back with 7:27 left in the first half cut the lead down to just two, but that's as close as the Raiders would get. A Cam Spicer (Grand Rapids, MI) layup with 1:11 left in the game made it a single digit game, but the Chargers finished the game making eight free throws in a row to seal the victory.

D'Avery Moore (Kentwood, MI) was 3 of 6 from deep, but as a team the Raiders shot 6 of 36 from three point distance, a 16.7% clip that was their second lowest of the season.  The Chargers on the other hand had six guys make at least one three and they were 8 for 22 for the game.  Ty'Sean Sheppard (21 points-15 rebounds-5 assists) and Josh Alcindor (14 points off the bench) each made two.

Spicer would finish the game with a team high 18 points on 7 of 13 from the field.  Ryans had his second double-double in a row with 14 points and 10 rebounds.  Diego Robinson (Lansing, MI) added another double-double to his long list with 13 points and 14 rebounds.  Moore had 13 points, 6 rebounds and 2 blocks.

The Raiders will get two more chances to win the conference title before post season begins.  Monday they travel to Battle Creek to take on Kellogg Community College, a team they beat by 27 back in January.  They will finish conference play on Wednesday in Sophomore Day against Kalamazoo Valley.  The Raiders have already clinched a one or two seed in the District Tournament that begins in less than two weeks.  To view all the details of the tournament click here
