Raiders Are Heading Back to Nationals After Tenth District Title

Port Huron, Mich. -- The Raider volleyball team is heading back to nationals after a 3-0 victory in the Great Lakes B District Championship Saturday afternoon.  The Raiders defeated Glen Oaks Community College 25-21, 25-21, 25-23 punching their ticket to Nationals for the tenth time in the history of the program.  Last year the Raiders finished sixth place, which was their second highest finish ever.

The 13th ranked Raiders had an opening round bye, and would wind up playing Muskegon Community College in their first match on Thursday night.  The Jayhawks would go down for the 14th time in the last 15 tries against the Raiders by scores of 25-15, 28-26, 25-22.  The Raiders offensive tallied an impressive 51 kills on the night, getting 10 each from Danielle Johnston and Annie Holesinger and eight more from Jamie Rozell and Jasmine Wellet.  Libero Mykayla Vallad led four players with 10 or more digs with 17.  Freshman Kylie Oberlin had seven kills, no hitting errors and three blocks.

In the winner's bracket final on Friday night, the Raiders squared off against the Glen Oaks Vikings, who swept both of their opponents on opening day, including #1 seeded Sinclair Community College.  The Raiders took care of the Vikings 25-18 in the first, before losing 25-14 in the second.  In the third, they got down 4-1, but ripped off six straight points to lead 7-4 and would never trail the remainder of the match, winning 25-21 and then 25-19.  Johnston finished with a match high 14 kills, while Oberlin totaled 13 and Wellet and Holesinger added 11.  All four Raiders would end up being named to the All-Tournament team.

Saturday's re-match with the Vikings was a battle to the finish.  In the end, the Raiders would defeat the Vikings for the 11th straight time with a three set sweep. Oberlin and Gabi Kitley assisted on the championship winning block in the 25-23 final set.  For Oberlin, it was her 14th block of the entire tournament. Holesinger would lead the Raiders with 12 kills, with Johnston tallying 11 and Oberlin adding 8.   Setters Kailey Carmean and Jamie Wellet each had 18 assists while Vallad was the dig leader once again with 18.

Johnston was named the Most Valuable Player of the Tournament after totaling 35 kills, 30 digs, 5 aces and 3 blocks.  Chip Will was named the District B Coach of the Year.
