Box Score Grand Rapids, Mich. – The 8th ranked Raiders (17-2 overall/10-1 in the conference) were coming off a huge five set victory at 20th ranked Muskegon Community College on Tuesday and weren't going to be denied their 17th win of the year as they easily took care of business against the visiting Red Hawks on Thursday, 25-18, 25-16, 25-13.
Lake Michigan College (8-18 overall/3-9 in the conference) got off to an early 6-3 lead in the match, but the Raiders would pull ahead 9-8, never losing the lead and winning the opening set, 25-18. The Raiders who started a brand new lineup for the match we're led by Freshman Outside, Emma Pachulski (Belding, MI), who had four kills. Sophomore All-American, Kendra DeJonge (Rockford, MI) added three kills for the Raiders who had 15 total in the set.
The national ranked Raiders started the second set with another new lineup and it didn't change the outcome, finishing the set on a 13-4 run to win 25-16. Pachulski and Sophomore Outside/Right Side, Cassidy Schumacher (Grand Haven, MI), each had three kills for the Raiders who hit .308 with just two attack errors. Freshman Outside/DS, Jasmine Wellet (Coldwater, MI), led the squad with eight of the team's 23 total digs.
Two every day starters did not play the entire match, Ally German (rest) and Kayla Salyer (recovering from injury). Two more starters, DeJonge and Dani Johnston (Comstock Park, MI) got some rest in the third set as yet again the Raiders used a new lineup, including Sophomore, Lindsey Glaz (Walker, MI), who got to start at the L1 spot. Glaz ended up getting the kill to the end the match as well as her first block of the season a few points earlier!
Freshman DS, Katelynn Kietzman (Alto, MI), got the nod to play the Libero position in the third set and put up great numbers, digging up 9 balls and adding four more aces to her resume. Those aces all came in an 11 point run early in the set. The home team won the set easily 25-13 securing yet another sweep of the LMC Red Hawks. Freshmen Bre Wickerink (Lake Odessa, MI) and Lauren Jonker (Grand Haven, MI) led the offensive attack with three kills apiece.
For the match, eight different players tallied up at least one kill, seven players had at least one assist, five players at least one ace, six players had at least one block and 12 players dug at least one ball. Leading the offensive attack was Wickerink and Pachulski who each had 8 kills. Jonker chipped in with 7 and hit .500 for the match. Setters, Autumn Severn (New Lothrup, MI) and Jamie Wellet (Coldwater, MI) combined for 26 assists and added 18 digs. Severn and Sophomore, Kelsie Schultz (Fruitport, MI), led the defense with 11 digs each. DeJonge, Wickerink, Pachulski and Jonker each had three blocks.
Game Notes:
-It was the 18th sweep in the past 10 seasons over Lake Michigan College.
-The Raiders in the "Chip Will" era (12 seasons) are now 24-1 against LMC, including winners of 20 in a row.
-The Raiders become the first team in the Region to clinch a spot in this year's NJCAA District E Tournament, held in Port Huron, MI on November 1st-3rd.
-GRCC will be on the road on Tuesday, October 9th at Ancilla College and return home Thursday, October 11th to take Kellogg Community College. Both matches went three sets last time.
