Grand Rapids, MI. -- The Grand Rapids Drive and Grand Rapids Community College have teamed up for spirit week at GRCC. Spirit week ends with the GRCC women's and men's basketball games vs. Kalamazoo Valley Community College on Friday, February 24 at the Ford Fieldhouse. The women's team tips off against the nation's 6th ranked team at 5:30PM. The men's teams will follow at 7:30PM.
KVCC cougar's women's basketball team is currently 21-3 overall and 14-1 in conference, with a 14 game winning streak. GRCC's overall record is 13-12, and they advanced to 6-9 in conference after a win at Kellogg Community College. KVCC defeated GRCC 95-35 in the last matchup between the two teams.
"Our main focus is half court and transition defense," head coach David Glazier. "We got scorched in transition during our game in Kalamazoo and didn't defend well in the half court. I expect us to perform better and be ready for a challenge. KVCC is a good team."
The KVCC men's team is struggling this year. The cougars overall record is 8-19 and only 2-15 in conference play. Their only conference wins are to Kellogg and Glen Oaks, and they are on a six game losing streak.
GRCC is currently 15-11 overall and 9-6 in conference. GRCC defeated KVCC 88-74 the first time they squared off back in January.
"Tomorrow we need to make sure we bring our energy and are ready to communicate on defense," says sophomore guard, Jeffrey Drake-Todd..."We need to focus on working together."
Since GRCC is partnering with the Grand Rapids Drive, their mascot will be in attendance tonight at both games and will have free giveaways.
At halftime of the women's game, there will be "minute to win it" games and the winners will receive prizes.
For halftime on the men's game, the campus activity board will present the winner of the spirit week banner competition. The winning campus organization will receive 250 dollars to go toward their organization.
Come out and celebrate spirit week at GRCC and cheer on the women's and men's basketball teams!
