Baseball falls to Kellogg 3-17 in Region XII Tournament opener

Box Score Battle Creek, Mich -- A 3-0 lead in the top of the first was as good as it got for GRCC's baseball squad as they were crushed by Kellogg 17-3 in 5 innings.  Kellogg wasted no time answering the Raiders scores in game one of the Region XII Tournament scoring seven runs in the bottom of the second to take the lead.  They never looked back.

The Bruins recorded 13 hits to the Raiders 3, including three doubles, one tripple and two home runs--one solo and one grand slam.

GRCC's Santiago Mendez took the loss for GRCC pitching just .2 innings while allowing five hits, four walks and seven earned runs before Head Coach Mike Cupples brought in Aaron Fadden.  Fadden pitched one inning allowing 5 hits, two walks and six earned runs.  Matt Hayes pitched two innings for the Raiders allowing three hits and one earned run with two walks, two HBP, and two strikeouts. Doug Cesena wrapped up the game for the Raiders facing one batter who popped up for an out.

Kellogg's Ben Speildenner earned the win for the Bruins pitching four innings allowing three hits, two earned runs, four walks and five strikeouts.  Alex Goodwin led the Bruins offensively hitting 3-of-4 scoring three runs while recording 6 RBI.

Kellogg remains in the winner's bracket and will face the winner of Sinclair and Mott tomorrow at 8PM at Brown.  Grand Rapids will have to battle back through the loser's bracket and will first face the loser of Muskegon and Vincennes to keep their post-season dreams alive.

While this is not the start the Raiders had hoped for, they're not down for the count.  GRCC has battled their way back to becoming Region XII Champs in the past the hard way. Few would have believed it would happen then. Few might believe it now.

Now 0-1 in Region XII Tournament play, GRCC is still 6 must-win games away from earning a trip to Enid, OK.
