DeMarkus Stuckey and the Raider basketball team began the 2014-2015 campaign in impressive fashion Wednesday night at Gordon Hunsburger Arena. GRCC defeated Mid-Michigan Community College 84-72. Point guard DeMarkus Stuckey was dominate from the onset of the game and led all players with 30 points and 14 rebounds.
The Raiders, while only dressing eight players, pushed the ball in transition and used the three point shot to build their 44-33 halftime lead. GRCC shot 50% from downtown in the half. Stuckey went 3 for 6 and sixth man,
Michael Miller came off the bench to hit 4 of his own. MMCC's
Erick Layton kept the Lakers within striking distance, scoring 12 points in the first half.
GRCC cooled down from three point range in the second half, but still managed to shoot 40% for the game (11 for 27). With 13:40 left in the second half, GRCC lead by 21 (58-37), MMCC switched 2/3 zone at that point and cut into the lead. MMCC forced 18 turnovers on the night, using those turnovers to inch their way back into the game. However, clutch free throw shooting from the Raiders (17-25, 68%) in the late going secured the victory 84-72.
The Raiders had four players in double digits led by DeMarkus Stuckey, 30 points, 14 rebounds and 5 assists. Stuckey did turn the ball over six times and will need to improve upon his assist to turnover ratio for the Raiders to have continued success.
Kevin Brower (10 points, 11 rebound),
Calvin Ward (10 points) and Michael Miller (12 points) were the others in double figures for GRCC.
Greg Flemming paced the Raiders with 3 steals while
Jeffrey Drake-Todd dished out 7 assists. The Lakers of MMCC were led by Erick Layton who impressed with 29 points (10 for 23) and
Trevor Gernaat (17 points, 5 for 17).
