Grand Rapids, Mich -- A 4-0 finish in the 2013 Raider Challenge leaves GRCC's eighth ranked Raiders at 20-3 overall and first in the MCCAA West standings.
GRCC made quick work of Genessee Community College (NY) defeating the visiting team 3-0. Micaela Deshetsky led GRCC in kills with 8; Emily Johnson trailed with 6. Taylor Gates's 20 assists and 12 digs led GRCC in both categories.
The Raiders' following match paired them against Lawerence Tech JV. Led by Lucia Kalmeyer with 6 kills and Jenna Karel and Shelby Ruffner who combined for 9 kills in the match, GRCC bested the Blue Devils in 3 sets.
Sunday's first match against NJCAA national poll vote earning Moraine Valley Community College, GRCC was tested, but ultimately won 3-1 as their middle hitters put in some serious work combining for 27 kills in four sets. Abbie Gortsema tallied 15 kills while Shelby Ruffner added 12.
Setter Taylor Gates offered 42 assists. Amanda Glaza and Emily Johnson led GRCC in digs with 17 and 12. Gortsema led the Raiders in blocks with 2 solos and three assists.
The loss snapped a Moraine Valley seven-game win streak while extending GRCC's to 8 as they entered their last match against St. Clair.
In their last match against unranked but vote receiving St. Clair County Community College's Skippers, Emily Johnson delivered 14 kills to lead her team in their 3-0 win. Tayler Friend and Abbie Gortsema added seven and eight kills, respectively.
The Raiders face Kalamazoo Valley Community College's Cougars on Tuesday September 1st at 6:30PM at GRCC's Ford Fieldhouse. KVCC currently rests in third place in the MCCAA West with a 5-2 conference record while 12-5 overall.
A win Tuesday would extend GRCC's streak to 10 in 2013.
