Volleyball wins both in day one of the Scottsdale Classic

Scottsdale, AZ – GRCC's Raiders enter day two of the Scottsdale Classis 2-0 after two decisive wins over  Eastern Arizona College and South Mountain Community College.

The Raiders bested the DI Eastern Arizona Gila Monsters in three sets 25-20, 25-19, 15-13.  Leading the Raiders offensively was Emily Johnson  who finished with 9 kills and eleven digs. 

Shelby Ruffner and Tayler Friend each made substantial contributions with Ruffner adding seven kills while Friend added six kills and five digs. 

Against South Mountain GRCC appeared to have the Cougars tamed after two solid sets (25-17, 25-16), but dropped the third 22-25 before taking the fourth 25-15 for the win.

Friend, Johnson and Abbie Gortsema each recorded double digit kills.  Freshman DS Amanda Glaza tallied 20 digs in the contest while freshman setter Taylor Gates recorded 16 digs of her own on top of 38 assists and four kills.

The pair of wins put the Raiders at 10-2 overall this season.

Today GRCC faces both Chandler-Gilbert and Scottsdale Community Colleges at 1:00 and 6:00 PM MST, respectively.

The Chandler-Gilbert Coyotes are led by sophomore middle blocker Jaden Green and freshman middle blocker Jessica Settle who have combined for 55 kills in their 1-4 season thus far.

The Scottsdale Artichokes, 4-2 as of September 10th, are led by sophomore middle blocker Selina Petrosky with 30 kills, sophomore outside Mary Guck with 33 kills and freshman outside Brittany Bruning with 30 kills.
