Box Score 2 Grand Rapids, MI – A pair of wins over Muskegon Community College’s Jayhawks leaves GRCC second overall in the MCCAA West with 9-1 conference record just one game behind now 10-0 Kalamazoo Valley Community College.
GRCC’s hitters paved the way for the first game win with a strong first two innings. After holding Muskegon scoreless in the first,
Tiffanie Wolan hit a two-run bomb scoring
Megan Lee to put GRCC up 2-0.
In the second inning, Muskegon’s Telling tripled down the left field line scoring three, but GRCC came back in the bottom of the second to score five runs taking the 7-3 lead.
With two runs added in the third and fourth innings, Muskegon trailed by only two going into the top of the fifth, and mounted a comeback effort sending home four runners on singles by Agers and Gillings and a Sanicki double.
Down 7-9, GRCC returned fire in the bottom of the fifth as
Megan Galganski scored on a sac-fly by
Amanda Steig to pull within one 8-9.
Megan Lee then hit a three-run homer scoring
Shelby Roush and
Danielle Goad to put the Raiders on top 11-9.
Without their Head Coach following an ejection over a call, Muskegon was unable to answer in the sixth and seventh innings while GRCC added another pair of runs to take a 13-9 lead in the sixth and the win.
Sophomore
Kayla Goodwin earned the win pitching a complete game allowing 17 hits, 9 earned runs and three walks with three strikeouts.
Whether the Raider’s first game’s fifth inning comeback unsettled the Jayhawks or the lack of a head coach for the second game started threw off Muskegon’s rhythm will forever be unknown. But, what is discernible is that GRCC was simply on fire in the second contest against Muskegon.
GRCC finished off the Jawhawks in five innings 10-2 recording 14 hits on 24 at bats led by Megan Lee who went 3-of-4 with two runs.
Tiani Beck, Kaitlyn Guobis and Wolan each recorded two RBI.
Ingrid Kukla earned her eighth win of the season pitching five innings allowing 5 hits, two earned runs, no walks and two strikeouts.
Weather permitting, GRCC will travel to face the MCCAA’s top team in Kalamazoo Valley Community College on Tuesday April 9th with the first of two games commencing at 3:00PM.
