Grand Rapids, MI—With a pair of double headers over the weekend, the Raiders walked away with their heads held high. The team earned 3 victories in 4 games against Delta College and Aquinas College, with the one victory coming in the final contest against the Saints.
The Raiders offense was in full gear on Saturday, when the team visited University Center, MI to take on Delta College.
GRCC earned a win in the opening contest in impressive fashion. The team received some stellar individual efforts by Mike Battistelli and Dylan VanPutten. Battistelli scored 3 times while VanPutten increased his batting average with 3 hits, one of which was a double. By the end of the play, he knocked home 4 runners.
After winning the first game by a 9-4 margin, the Raiders took the field with confidence yet again.
This time around, the game proved to be much closer. Delta gained the initial lead in the opening inning of play before yielding a run to GRCC, only to regain the lead the very next inning. Delta held the lead until the 7th inning, when the Raiders tied the game up.
GRCC scored the final run of the game when Ian Stankus reached home on a Nick Jansen single, completing the sweep of Delta with a 9-4 victory in the first game and a 4-3 victory in the second.
Sunday’s games proved to be a bit of a grudge match, with both teams receiving some help from ace pitchers in the first game and some serious slugging in the next.
Connor Swinford earned a 2-1 win for the Raiders by pitching all 7 innings of play. Despite giving up a total of 9 hits, the Raiders frustrated AQ by allowing only one run. The game finished with a 2-1 score in the favor of GRCC.
The next game was an all-out slugfest. At 10-12, the game was one of the highest scoring contests the Raiders have played in this year.
Despite the best efforts of Jim Eloff and Nick Jansen, who each had a pair of hits, the Raiders fell to a powerful AQ offense. The Saints capitalized on some strong play by Greg Baranyai and Elliot Drain who each earned 3 RBI’s during play.
GRCC is now 12-16 on the season. Approaching the .500 mark, the Raiders will take to the field next when they host Glen Oaks Community College in a double header on Tuesday. The Vikings are an even .500 in conference play thus far in 2013, a couple of games behind the Raiders.
