Flint, MI—The Raiders are approaching .500 on the season, and have improved to a 15-19 overall record after dealing a pair of losses to the Bears of Mott Community College on Sunday. The pair of victories now has them sitting in second place in the MCCAA, 3 games behind Kellogg Community College.
Despite having to sit for nearly a week due to rain delays, the Raiders did not miss a step in returning to the field. The team jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead in the first inning, and held the lead for the remainder of the first game.
Aaron Jensen pitched all 7 innings for the Raiders. Despite allowing 7 hits, the Raiders proved to be up to the task on the defensive side of things, and held the Bears scoreless. The team earned 3 double plays during the game.
Jacob Waters was the first of the Raiders to reach home on a Dylan VanPutten single, and the run proved to be all the Raiders would need, eventually winning the contest 5-0.
The Raiders proved to be an enigma for Mott both on the field and at bat during the second contest.
Austin Stephens pitched 6 innings for GRCC, holding the bears to only 4 hits while hurling 4 strikeouts along the way. Stephens and company allowed MCC to score only twice.
The offensive charge began immediately. Mike Battistelli earned a single and would eventually reach home on a Brian Portelli sac-fly. In total, Portelli reached base all 4 times he came to the plate, 3 of which were singles and one time when he was hit by a pitch.
Jake Waters also had 3 singles during the game along with a pair of RBI’s and Brian Portelli swung for a single and a double during play before the teams walked off the field with a 12-2 victory.
Now on a 4 game winning streak, the Raiders take the field next when they host Muskegon Community College on Tuesday. The Jayhawks sit directly behind the Raiders in the MCCAA’s standings, and have earned a 21-11 overall record on the season.
