Clermont, FL – Two wins give GRCC’s softball team something to celebrate as they take a day off Monday, March 4, 2013 to prepare for the rest of their spring schedule.
With a 0-4 record prior to the start of the West Virginia Wesleyan game Sunday, March 3, GRCC was in a bit of a slump. The Raider pitching staff has been struggling to slow their opponents at bat and errors plagued the young team’s ability to generate a winning rhythm.
While GRCC’s 9-6 win over West Virginia Wesleyan JV wasn’t the prettiest of wins, it was a win.
The Raiders totaled nine runs on twelve hits with one error. Wesleyan’s Bobcats scored six runs on seven hits with three errors.
Kayla Goodwin picked up her first win of the spring pitching a complete game. Goodwin allowed seven hits with four earned runs while striking out four and walking three batters.
Tiffanie Wolan,
Kaitlyn Guobis and
Megan Lee each went 2-of-2 from the plate with one run. Wolan and Guobis recorded a RBI. Shelby Roush hit 2-of-5 with one RBI.
Casey Swink was 2-of-4 with one run and one RBI.
Amanda Steig went just 1-of-3, but made that that hit count with a one RBI triple in the fifth inning.
The Raiders picked up a game with the MCCAA’s Macomb Community College’s Monarchs after a scheduling conflict with Point Park left GRCC without a second game on Sunday.
Macomb was no match for Freshman pitcher
Ingrid Kukla Kukla faced 18 batters during GRCC’s five inning, 8-0 mercy striking out fourteen while allowing only three hits. Kukla finished with her first win of the season, now 1-2 overall, and a 4.65 ERA.
GRCC’s
Amber Frye led the Raiders offensively hitting 2-of-2 for two RBI with one double, one walk and one run. Steig ang Guobis also recorded doubles in the five inning game with Guobis’ double sending in three runners.
GRCC is now 2-4 down south with a day of rest ahead of them before picking back up Tuesday the 5
th with a double header against 12-11 NJCAA DI South Florida State College.
